Humanoid Robot Sets Half Marathon Record in Beijing with 50:26 Finish

The CSR Journal Magazine

A humanoid robot competing in a half marathon has shattered the world record in Beijing, highlighting the impressive strides made in technology by Chinese manufacturers. The event took place in Yizhuang, a district in the southern part of the capital, on Sunday, where the robot outpaced human competitors.

The robot, developed by smartphone maker Honor, finished the approximately 21 km (13-mile) race in a remarkable time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This translates to an average speed of roughly 25 km/h (15.5 mph), significantly quicker than the best human participant and notably surpassing the existing men’s world record of 57:20, previously held by Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo.

Significant Progress Demonstrated in Robotics

This year’s competition witnessed a striking improvement from the previous year, when humanoid robots struggled to maintain stability and took over two hours and 40 minutes to complete the course. The number of robotic entries surged from around 20 in 2022 to more than 100 in 2023, an indication of the growing interest in and development of robotic technology.

Observers gathered along the route to see the blend of technology and sport, with participants organised into separate lanes to prevent collisions. The agility of some robots resembled that of renowned athletes like Usain Bolt, while others exhibited more rudimentary abilities.

Han Chenyu, a 25-year-old onlooker, expressed excitement at the technological advancements seen at the event. She noted, however, that such rapid development raises concerns regarding employment consequences as artificial intelligence continues to evolve.

Future Implications of Humanoid Robotics

The growing presence of humanoid robots in China is evident both in the media and in everyday situations. Spectators at the event, such as Xie Lei, a 41-year-old family man, speculated about the future integration of robots into daily life for tasks ranging from household chores to elderly companionship and even high-risk professions like firefighting.

The primary objective of the humanoid half marathon is to promote innovation and demonstrate the capabilities of modern robotic technologies. A government study indicated that by 2025, investment in robotics and embodied artificial intelligence in China could reach 73.5 billion yuan ($10.8 billion).

Xie Lei remarked on the comparative advancements of robots in autonomous navigation within this specific event, noting that it highlights a shift in technological supremacy. While such advancements may evoke sentiments of nostalgia for human dominance, they also inspire a sense of wonder at the capabilities technology has delivered in recent years.
