Concerns regarding the increasing public anger over the ongoing imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan have been voiced by a senior member of his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Sohail Afridi, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stated that unrest, particularly among the youth, could reach a level that might render Khan’s appeals for reconciliation ineffective. Speaking to reporters outside the Supreme Court in Islamabad, Afridi expressed that he perceives a “spark of revolution” within the younger demographic, which he believes could be uncontrollable.

Rising Unrest and Potential Protests

Afridi’s comments come closely following a warning he issued about the possibility of nationwide protests if Khan is not permitted a meeting with party representatives who are scheduled to visit him in jail this week. He emphasised that all parliamentarians from PTI plan to visit Khan on Thursday, asserting that significant demonstrations could erupt across Pakistan should this access be denied. Public sentiment appears to be shifting, with many supporters openly expressing dissatisfaction with the current government’s actions against their leader.

Khan, aged seventy-three, has been held at Adiala Jail since 2023 amid multiple legal challenges. His party has repeatedly raised allegations that authorities are obstructing his connection with family and party members, as well as failing to provide adequate medical care for his reported health issues, including an eye condition. These concerns have only intensified calls for action from PTI’s leadership.

As part of a sit-in protest outside the Supreme Court, Afridi reiterated that public frustration could escalate beyond control, indicating that even a plea for peace from Khan might struggle to resonate with the masses. The urgency behind these comments underscores a rising tension that PTI claims is rooted in ongoing grievances over Khan’s treatment as an inmate.

Concerns Over Khan’s Health and Judicial Integrity

Afridi has also expressed his alarm regarding Khan’s health status, refuting any claims that the former Prime Minister has sought medical relief from his imprisonment. He described Khan’s detention as “unjust” and a result of “fabricated cases.” These statements have put additional pressure on the authorities as public scrutiny grows over the former leader’s conditions. Afridi’s rhetoric suggests that those who have perpetrated what he calls oppression will face consequences in the future.
