Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer Abhishek Porel has been arrested by Mogra Police in Hooghly district over allegations of sexual exploitation, coercion, and blackmail. The development was formally submitted before the Calcutta High Court during a hearing on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. Porel is expected to be produced shortly before the Chinsurah Court, where his bail application will be considered.
Background of the Allegations
The case stems from a complaint filed by a medical student at Mogra Police Station. According to the complainant, the Chandannagar-born wicketkeeper-batsman engaged in a relationship with her under the false promise of marriage.The victim further alleged that Porel coerced her into physical relationships and subsequently blackmailed her using private and sensitive photographs.Following the initial complaint, the victim moved the Calcutta High Court, seeking judicial intervention.
During an earlier hearing on July 14 before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, the petitioner’s legal teamcomprising advocates Ronybhav Sengupta, Akash Ganguly, and Amandeep Gupta—highlighted that 19 separate counts had been invoked against the cricketer.
Severe Charges and High Court Directives
The legal provisions invoked against Porel include non-bailable charges related to sexual assault and intimidation, alongside Sections 66E and 72 of the Information Technology Act.
Court Observation:The petitioner’s counsel emphasized that sensitive digital evidence remained on Porel’s personal devices, posing an immediate threat to the victim’s privacy and dignity. In response, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed the Mogra Police to immediately confiscate all electronic devices, including mobile phones belonging to the accused, and submit a comprehensive progress report.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, the police informed the bench of Porel’s arrest. Justice Bhattacharyya ordered an immediate forensic and technical examination of the seized devices. The Calcutta High Court has scheduled the next hearing for September 3.
