Rashid Latif, the former captain of the Pakistan cricket team, has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to limit Babar Azam’s interactions with the English media during the team’s upcoming Test series in England. Latif’s request is based on concerns that Babar may be subjected to intense scrutiny from the English press, which is known for probing visiting teams. He proposed that Shan Masood, another former captain, should be appointed as the media representative for the series.

In a recent segment on Geo News programme Score, Latif stated, “An England tour is a difficult assignment, and the English media often tries to unnecessarily involve visiting teams in news stories.” He believes that this dynamic could weigh heavily on Babar, prompting his call for a strategic choice in media representation.

Furthermore, Latif suggested, “Babar Azam is an experienced player, so it would be better for the PCB management to keep him away from the English media and send former captain Shan Masood to speak to them more often.” Longevity in competitive cricket positions Masood as a key candidate for this role, particularly given his prior experiences in England.

Babar Azam’s Recent Performances

Latif’s remarks follow Babar Azam’s noteworthy performance in a recent two-Test series against the West Indies. In the first Test held at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Babar contributed significantly, scoring an unbeaten 58 runs. However, his efforts were overshadowed by Pakistan’s overall performance, as the team fell short, losing by 90 runs.

During the second Test at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Babar responded with a commendable innings, tallying 88 runs off 147 balls. His efforts helped the team reach 387 in their first innings, a target that surpassed the West Indies’ total of 344 runs. Babar also contributed with an unbeaten 24 runs in the second innings, aiding Pakistan to a win by eight wickets, which enabled them to level the series 1-1.

This victory was particularly significant as it marked the end of Pakistan’s eight-match losing streak in Test matches abroad and represented Babar’s first overseas Test win since assuming the role of captain.

Upcoming Test Series Against England

Looking ahead, Pakistan is set to commence their three-match Test series against England, with the first match scheduled to begin at Headingley in Leeds on August 19. Following this, the second Test will be played at Lord’s from August 27, culminating with the final match at Edgbaston, commencing on September 9.

The upcoming series poses a critical test for both the team and its captain, Babar Azam. With Latif’s advice in mind, the PCB may reassess their media engagement strategies in order to best support their leadership. As the team prepares for this significant opportunity, maintaining a favourable media environment could potentially bolster their performance during the series.
