US President Donald Trump reportedly changed aircraft while travelling from Turkiye to Britain last month due to a credible threat linked to Iran, as detailed in a report by The Washington Post. This decision was made against a backdrop of escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran.

The shift occurred shortly after Trump boarded the Air Force One jet in Ankara. Minutes later, he was quietly transferred to a smaller military aircraft, an Air Force C-32A, using an airport catering truck typically employed for loading provisions. This covert operation allowed the older Air Force One to act as a decoy for the press travelling on board, who were unaware that Trump had left the aircraft.

Initially, Trump had travelled to the NATO summit aboard a newly added Boeing 747-8 jet provided by Qatar, but he later stated on social media that he would return on the “former Air Force One.” Reports indicated that the Secret Service instructed journalists to keep the windows of the aircraft closed at take-off to maintain security.

Security Measures and Historical Context

The Washington Post cited an unnamed US official who confirmed that a specific threat involving Iran had prompted this “deception operation.” Other media outlets, including The New York Times and CBS News, reiterated that intelligence officials had identified a potential threat directed at the president or his aircraft, necessitating heightened security measures.

This technique of disguising aircraft for the safety of the president is not unprecedented. In a similar incident in 2000, former president Bill Clinton flew to Pakistan from India in an unmarked Gulfstream aircraft instead of using Air Force One. Trump’s recent aircraft switch has raised questions regarding the security of the newly acquired Qatar-gifted jet, leading to his announcement of future upgrades.

Upon arrival at Mildenhall in Britain, photographers captured images of Trump as he exited the presidential plane, suggesting that he had re-boarded Air Force One away from the view of reporters who assumed they were travelling with him. Following a brief stop at the base, Trump continued his journey to Washington on the new Air Force One.

Ongoing Tensions and Military Actions

During his time in Turkiye, Trump addressed the media aboard the aircraft and was questioned about any credible threats from Iran regarding Air Force One. He responded, acknowledging that he faced threats continuously, asserting that he was “number one on their list.” Trump added a cautionary remark about the fate of reporters if he were to face an attack.

While Trump was in Turkiye, the US military reportedly conducted a series of strikes against targets in Iran, responding to previous assaults on merchant vessels in the region. Iran has stated that it would consider reopening the Strait of Hormuz only if the US ceases its blockade of Iranian ports and meets other specified conditions. The Strait’s closure has significantly affected global oil prices.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi previously emphasised that securing the Strait of Hormuz required an end to what he described as aggressive US actions, including unlawful interventions and naval blockades. In light of this, Trump indicated on social media that he would instruct negotiators to seek compensation from Iran for the harm caused by their actions over the years.
