Kamaljeet’s transition from athletics to shooting is marked by both challenges and determination. An injury on the track interrupted his initial dreams, prompting a significant shift in his sporting career when he took up pistol shooting in 2019. His journey, however, did not come without obstacles, primarily financial ones, as he endeavoured to establish himself in a new discipline.

Despite these hurdles, Kamaljeet credits his family’s unwavering support for his perseverance. Reflecting on his early struggles, he stated, “We are a middle-class family, but my parents never let me quit shooting.” He had to cover his own expenses for training and competitions initially, resulting in intense pressure. Yet, his family provided whatever assistance they could, ensuring he could pursue his newfound passion.

In Haryana, where he began his shooting career, Kamaljeet relied heavily on a supportive network. His journey was foundationally built with the help of a single shooting coach from his village, enhancing the feeling of familial bonding in his training. He remarked, “Between my coach and my uncle at home, I’ve had the strongest foundation throughout this journey.”

Achieving Recognition Through Hard Work

Kamaljeet’s persistence paid off as his improved performance garnered attention, allowing him to receive support from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI). “Earlier, I used to struggle to manage basic expenses,” he explained. The sponsorship reduced that burden and allowed him to focus more on shooting and less on financial worries.

His inclusion in the national team came strictly through merit, based on the ranking points earned during various events. This performance-driven structure motivated him significantly. “When you know the system is entirely performance-driven, it instills confidence to focus solely on your shooting,” he added. This clarity has fostered a strong competitive spirit, enabling him to perform under pressure.

With a track record of achievements, Kamaljeet has established himself as a formidable competitor. He recently claimed gold in the 50m Pistol Men Junior event at the 2023 ISSF Junior World Championships and secured silver at the Asian Championships in New Delhi. These successes have boosted his confidence as he prepares for the upcoming Asian Games.

Preparing for Success at the Asian Games

Kamaljeet is looking forward to representing India at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. He has gained valuable experience from his participation in earlier competitions, viewing his recent World Cup experience as crucial for preparing for the Games. “The World Cup was a valuable learning experience,” he noted, stating that while the results were not what he had hoped for, it ignited his motivation for further improvement.

This will be Kamaljeet’s debut at the Asian Games, and he feels more confident having accumulated international competition experience. He is eager to showcase his skills, with aspirations for the gold medal in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol event. “I have the belief that I can deliver under match pressure,” he shared, highlighting his growth in the sport.

Reflecting on the injury that led him to this new path, Kamaljeet has embraced a philosophy of resilience and positivity. He believes that even if things do not unfold as one initially anticipated, they can ultimately lead to outcomes more rewarding than imagined. This mindset exemplifies his journey in sport as he readies himself for the challenges ahead in Japan.
