On Monday, China’s Ambassador to Nepal, Zhang Maoming, held discussions with Prime Minister Balendra Shah, focusing on enhancing bilateral relations. This meeting took place at Singhadurbar, the official residence and office of the Prime Minister, as reported by the Prime Minister’s Office. The dialogue centred on mutual interests and the potential for development partnerships between the two nations.

The Prime Minister’s Office released a statement following the meeting, outlining that the two parties discussed strengthening Nepal-China ties and promoting collaboration in various sectors. Zhang expressed his well wishes for the Prime Minister and reiterated the commitment to furthering mutual cooperation.

The meeting is part of Shah’s ongoing diplomatic outreach, which included an earlier meeting with Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava. Shah is also set to meet the US Embassy Charge d’Affaires on Tuesday.

Recent Engagements by Prime Minister Shah

Prime Minister Balendra Shah has been active in diplomatic interactions following a previously cautious stance on one-on-one meetings. Previously, he notably declined to engage with high-profile officials, including US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Samir Paul Kapur, and President Donald Trump’s special envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor.

Shah’s approach shifted when he agreed to a one-on-one meeting with Masato Kanda, President of the Asian Development Bank, during Kanda’s three-day visit to Nepal starting from July 6. This interaction marked a significant moment in Shah’s diplomatic strategy, demonstrating a willingness to connect with international leaders directly.

Despite these engagements, Shah has yet to undertake visits to either of Nepal’s neighbouring countries, India or China. Instead, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has actively promoted Nepal’s international relations, fostering connections through back-to-back visits to both New Delhi and Beijing in June.

Aiming for Stronger Ties with Neighbours

During these outings, Khanal emphasised Nepal’s aspirations to cultivate stronger relationships with both India and China, which he described as essential partners for the Himalayan nation. He articulated a vision for Nepal to evolve from being landlocked to becoming a vibrant and dynamic bridge between the two major powers. This perspective represents a shift in approach, recognising the significance of enhanced regional cooperation.

The discussions with the Chinese ambassador on Monday underscore Nepal’s continued efforts in maintaining an active diplomatic stance. This comes alongside a commitment to uphold strong ties with both India and the United States. Shah’s interactions reflect a multi-faceted foreign policy strategy aimed at balancing relations with neighbouring nations while seeking opportunities for international collaboration.

The ongoing dialogue illustrates the importance of Nepal-China relations in the context of regional dynamics. As Nepal navigates its position among these influential neighbours, the government is dedicated to focusing on mutual interests and cooperation, ensuring that it remains an integral player in the geopolitics of the region.
