Kamal Haasan, President of Makkal Needhi Maiyam (MNM) and Member of Parliament, has voiced strong criticisms regarding the current education system in India and the recent irregularities surrounding examination processes. He described the existing educational landscape as “rotten” and expressed his disappointment over the handling of the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) controversy. Haasan took to X to articulate his concerns, stating that the nation has fundamentally failed its youth.

In his remarks, Haasan lamented, “We should have listened when one child cried. Instead, we waited until far too many of our children died.” He highlighted numerous systemic issues, suggesting that coaching has overtaken genuine learning while anxiety is now a substitute for curiosity. The actor-turned-politician strongly implied that criminality has replaced merit within the educational framework.

Moreover, Haasan indicated that the current state of affairs reflects a broader failure of the country, where children are met with “barricades and batons instead of answers.” His remarks aim to draw attention to the emotional and psychological toll that educational pressures are placing on students, especially in competitive environments such as NEET.

Appeal to Climate Activist and Call to Action

In addition to his criticism of the education system, Kamal Haasan made a heartfelt appeal to climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was reportedly on a hunger strike. Haasan urged Wangchuk to end his fast, stating, “The nation will need your conscience for the journey ahead.” He further reassured students by proclaiming, “You are the best of us. You have done your duty. It is now time for the country to do its duty by you.”

Haasan’s comments resonate with the broader discontent among students and their families regarding the high-stakes nature of NEET examinations, which are crucial for admission into medical colleges. The emotional plea reflects a growing movement advocating for reforms to improve the overall educational experience for students across India.

Government’s Response to Criticism

In response to Haasan’s criticisms, BJP MP Medha Kulkarni has defended the government’s actions, highlighting measures taken under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. She pointed out the establishment of fast-track courts aimed at expediting cases related to examination paper leaks. Kulkarni asserted that the current administration has always been attentive to educational needs and the welfare of younger generations.

Kulkarni remarked, “This government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has always been very sensitive to education.” She expressed confidence that the introduction of fast-track courts would ensure that those responsible for paper leaks would face stringent consequences.

Addressing the NEET-UG controversy specifically, Kulkarni contended that the government has swiftly addressed the allegations of exam paper leaks and assured that all accused individuals are currently in custody. She affirmed that a re-examination took place, results were announced, and successful learners are celebrating their achievements. “Those who studied well have received justice and achieved good results,” she stated.
