The CSR Journal Magazine

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has recently reviewed the ongoing projects and financial aspects of the Jal Jeevan Mission. This review meeting, held on August 13, 2026, at the Secretariat, was aimed at assessing the overall advancement and operational management of various water supply schemes in the state.

During this meeting, topics such as the state of tap water coverage among rural households, water quality assurance, and financial management were brought to light. The Chief Minister emphasised that the success of the mission should not simply be measured by the quantity of tap connections but rather the provision of consistent, safe, and quality drinking water to every household.

Dhami directed officials to aim for complete coverage under the Har Ghar Jal initiative, ensuring that all eligible rural households receive tap water connections within a predetermined timeline. He also insisted on the physical verification of completed projects to ensure accountability and transparency.

Action Plans for Timely Completion

The Chief Minister prioritised the timely completion of all ongoing drinking water schemes and instructed that they be executed in a mission mode. District Magistrates were tasked with the responsibility of coordinating with various departments to expedite the resolution of any challenges encountered in these projects.

Regular reviews of both physical and financial progress for each scheme were mandated during the meeting. The importance of a robust mechanism for addressing technical issues related to water supply was underscored, and a permanent system for the operation and maintenance of these schemes was called for.

Additionally, the Chief Minister urged the formulation of district-specific targets and clear accountability measures. In instances of unnecessary delays, the responsibility would fall on the respective executing agencies and officials to provide justifications.

Current State of Water Supply Schemes

As reported by the Chief Minister’s Office, significant progress has been achieved in the state regarding the Jal Jeevan Mission. Of the total 16,555 water supply schemes planned, 15,540 have been successfully completed. The overall coverage now stands at 92.46 per cent, with 1,015 schemes still underway.

In relation to tap water supply, it was noted that 14.20 lakh out of the total 14.48 lakh rural households have been provided with tap water connections. This reflects the ongoing efforts to improve water accessibility for rural communities across Uttarakhand.

Officials also indicated that tap water supply verification has been conducted in 9,796 out of 14,979 villages within the state, further showcasing the commitment to ensuring quality water supply across rural locations.

Focus on Water Source Conservation

In addition to the immediate goals of the Jal Jeevan Mission, the Chief Minister highlighted the need for conservation and revitalisation of drinking water sources, especially in hilly regions. Strategies for rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge were discussed as part of a holistic approach to manage water resources.

Dhami instructed officials to devise mechanisms within each district to promptly resolve any technical difficulties related to water supply. The need for a sustainable operation and maintenance framework for these schemes was reiterated, aligning with broader objectives for water resource management.

The urgent attention to these matters underscores the government’s commitment to improving water security and accessibility for all residents, thus aiming for a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the water crisis in the region.
