Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra Arrives with Major Display Upgrades and Ultra-Slim Build

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has made significant strides in design without completely overhauling its predecessor’s framework. This model is notably slimmer and lighter, measuring just 4.1mm when unfolded, making it 0.1mm thinner than the previous Fold 7. This subtle reduction contributes to a more elegant and premium aesthetic, with a boxier shape that enhances its modern look.

Durability remains a priority for Samsung, as this device still holds an IP48 rating, providing some level of protection against dust and water. The hinge, constructed from flex titanium, adds to its durability. Users may find the satin matte finish attractive, though this can make the phone somewhat slippery. To mitigate this, a protective skin may be preferable to a bulky case.

While the camera bump is noticeable and may cause the phone to wobble when placed on a flat surface, Samsung has included a side-mounted fingerprint sensor that allows for swift unlocking, unlike in-display options. However, the omission of built-in S Pen support stands out, especially given the device’s 8-inch inner display that is well-suited for creative tasks.

Display Features

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is equipped with impressive display features that enhance its functionality. The 6.5-inch full HD+ cover screen features a 21:9 aspect ratio, which may take some adjustment for users accustomed to conventional smartphones. The device encourages users to unfold it, where they can enjoy a more expansive 8-inch inner display, ideal for media consumption and browsing.

Both displays support high resolutions, with the inner panel reaching 2504 x 2256p and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. The display performs admirably in different lighting conditions, proving effective even under direct sunlight. Users will appreciate the anti-reflective coating on the inner display, which reduces glare, although the cover screen lacks this feature.

While some users may notice the crease, it has been improved to the extent that it is less visible and smoother to touch. The visual performance remains strong, particularly for HDR10+ content on streaming platforms like Netflix, where colours are vibrant and contrasts nuanced.

Performance and Usability

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, designed for high performance. Its benchmarks indicate robust capabilities, although sustained performance shows some limitations. The Fold 8 Ultra managed 10,110 in Geekbench’s multi-core test. However, during demanding tasks, the device demonstrated a performance drop due to heat management issues.

Despite these limitations, everyday use exhibits a smooth experience, with rapid app openings and fluid scrolling, making it well-suited for multitasking. Users can run multiple applications simultaneously, such as viewing videos while messaging, without sacrificing performance.

Gaming performance is another strong aspect, with titles like Genshin Impact running smoothly at higher settings, though performance stabilisation appears compromised at peak graphic settings. The device supports a gaming experience that is enjoyable, although some adjustments may be required based on the game type.

Camera Capabilities

The camera system of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra excels in daylight, producing detailed images with a good dynamic range. The colours are vibrant without appearing overly processed, while portrait settings emphasise natural skin tones and clear subject-background separation.

Low-light conditions also reveal the camera’s versatility, managing exposure and detail effectively despite challenging lighting. The device controls noise well, though some fine details may be lost in shadows.

Samsung’s Fold 8 Ultra offers a balanced camera setup that meets a variety of user needs, performing admirably across different lighting scenarios and solidifying its reputation as a capable device in both casual and professional photography.
