The Rachnatmak Congress National Convention began on August 12 at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi. This two-day event gathered a diverse group of social organisations, activists, educators, and community representatives from across India. A press release indicated that the discussions aimed to address pressing issues such as inequality, unemployment, environmental degradation, education gaps, and the rights of marginalised communities.

Participants engaged in extensive dialogues that highlighted the growing disconnect between the general populace and the government. Key themes included the interconnectedness of economy and employment, social welfare, and cultural development. This format allowed voices from different backgrounds to contribute their perspectives for potential solutions.

Focus on Inequality and Employment Policies

The convention underscored the need for integral approaches to combat inequality and poverty, which were perceived as interconnected challenges. Many speakers expressed concerns regarding current government policies, arguing that these measures have contributed to a rise in inequality. They emphasised the necessity for deliberate shifts in policy that could foster a more equitable economic environment.

Education and health emerged as critical areas requiring immediate attention. An attendee pointed out that chronic underfunding has led to declining conditions in both sectors. With a significant number of schools shuttering and a drop in governmental health centres, participants questioned why the government cited a lack of resources when nearly 90 lakh government positions remain unfilled.

Another crucial point raised involved the tax system, which was described as disproportionately burdensome on ordinary citizens. Attendees called for reforms that would ensure fairer taxation and finance public projects effectively without over-reliance on the wealthiest sectors of society.

Environmental Issues Highlighted at the Gathering

The convention also addressed urgent environmental concerns, with particular attention drawn to the impact of illegal mining in Assam. A participant noted that several districts are facing serious ecological degradation due to human activities. Furthermore, participants discussed the broader implications of these environmental issues, stressing collective responsibility for restoration efforts.

Concerns were raised about deforestation in states like Chhattisgarh and Odisha, where industrial pollution is affecting local waterways. A scuba diver from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands warned that 90 per cent of the coral reefs are suffering from bleaching, which could disrupt local fisheries and impact approximately 50 lakh fishermen.

The discussions also encompassed various social issues such as homelessness, occupational safety in industries like sandstone mining, and the challenges faced by researchers due to a lack of adequate facilities. These topics highlighted the need for immediate action and collaborative solutions at local levels.

Commitment to Grassroots Action and Accountability

Emphasising the Right to Education, participants expressed concerns about the direction of the National Education Policy. Calls for comprehensive engagement strategies were made to ensure inclusive education, focusing particularly on disaggregated historical narratives that reflect diverse perspectives, notably those of Dalits and significant figures like Dr BR Ambedkar.

The convention encouraged a transition from dialogue to concrete programmes, urging strengthened networks from the grassroots level. An activist proposed a community-driven model termed “1 Gaon, 1 Samasya, 1 Samadhan” to foster local solutions.

The two-day event will continue with further discussions on August 13 at Mavlankar Hall in New Delhi, with participants reflecting on how these highlighted issues transcend any single political agenda. The convention concluded with a collective commitment to transforming talks into actionable initiatives for enhanced accountability among those in power.
