Malaysia Extends Ocean Infinity’s MH370 Deep-Sea Search Contract By One Year

The CSR Journal Magazine

The government of Malaysia has renewed its contract with marine robotics firm Ocean Infinity for an additional year to continue the deep-sea search for the wreckage of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. This announcement was made on June 29, 2026, by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He stated that the Cabinet has approved the extension of the “no-find, no-fee” arrangement until June 30, 2027.

Loke emphasised that this decision illustrates the government’s ongoing commitment to provide closure for the families of the passengers who were aboard MH370. The insistence on continuing this search demonstrates an awareness of the emotional weight that this tragedy carries for those affected.

The minister indicated that the already outlined search area of 7,428.54 square kilometres remains to be covered. He noted that Ocean Infinity would temporarily redeploy its primary search assets for commercial purposes but plans to return for the MH370 mission between November 2026 and April 2027, as this period is expected to offer safer conditions for underwater operations.

Background of the MH370 Disappearance

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared from radar shortly after takeoff on March 8, 2014. The aircraft, a Boeing 777, was carrying 239 individuals, primarily Chinese nationals, on a journey from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Subsequent satellite data suggested that the plane veered from its intended flight path, heading south into the southern Indian Ocean, where it is presumed to have crashed.

Despite extensive multinational search efforts, no evidence of the aircraft’s final location was uncovered. Over time, wreckage from the plane did wash ashore on various locations across the East African coastline and nearby islands. A separate private search initiative conducted by Ocean Infinity in 2018 also failed to yield substantial findings, compounding the mystery surrounding the aircraft’s disappearance.

Last year, Malaysia sanctioned a new search expedition by Ocean Infinity in a different 15,000-square-kilometre sector of the southern Indian Ocean. Under the terms of the contract, Ocean Infinity would receive compensation of $70 million solely if any wreckage is identified during this search.

Goals of the Extended Search Effort

The extension of Ocean Infinity’s contract aims to keep the search for MH370 active for another year. Malaysia has confirmed that this action seeks to ensure completion of the remaining search area while also addressing the need for closure among the relatives of those who were aboard the ill-fated flight.

As the extended search progresses, it highlights the continual international effort to gather more information regarding the fate of MH370. The families of the passengers are still hopeful that renewed searches could lead to discoveries that might finally clarify the event of the disappearance.

The collaboration between the Malaysian government and Ocean Infinity signifies an ongoing commitment to maritime safety and accountability, as well as an effort to honour the memory of those who lost their lives aboard flight MH370. The timeline for the return of search vessels aligns with the seasonal changes in the ocean, reflecting a strategic approach to maximise search efforts.
