Panama is actively pursuing India as a strategic partner to maintain the neutrality of the Panama Canal amidst increasing global geopolitical tensions, as stated by Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha Vasquez during his official visit to New Delhi on July 20. He emphasised the country’s commitment to preserving its independent foreign policy and national sovereignty in the context of the canal’s governance.

According to Martinez-Acha Vasquez, the Panama Canal embodies the essence of the nation’s sovereignty through its efficient and responsible management. He highlighted that the country’s achievements in enhancing the canal over the past 26 years have been primarily driven by Panamanian resources.

The Foreign Minister articulated that collaboration with major global powers, particularly India, is crucial for solidifying the canal’s neutrality treaty. He explained how geopolitical fluctuations have made the canal increasingly significant, as traffic that historically utilised the Suez Canal is now being redirected to Panama.

Emphasis on Neutrality and International Asset Status

Martinez-Acha Vasquez underscored the necessity of the neutrality treaty during discussions with India’s Foreign Minister, stressing the importance of respecting the Panama Canal as an international asset solely belonging to Panama. He reiterated that neutrality is a fundamental aspect in light of ongoing global political disturbances.

The Foreign Minister was keen to avoid engaging in any contest of rhetoric, particularly regarding comments from prominent global leaders such as US President Donald Trump.
