Pakistan has announced its intention to host the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games in early 2027. This development forms part of the nation’s efforts to revitalise the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). The announcement was made by Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, during a farewell meeting with the outgoing SAARC Secretary-General, Ambassador Golam Sarwar from Bangladesh.

During this meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Dar praised Ambassador Sarwar for his effective leadership and significant contributions to strengthening regional cooperation within SAARC. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the SAARC Charter and its importance in fostering socio-economic development among member states in South Asia.

Focus on Regional Cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister Dar noted the necessity for enhanced trade connections and efforts to alleviate poverty, highlighting these as vital components for improving the living standards of the region’s two billion inhabitants. He assured that Pakistan is fully prepared to undertake all necessary actions to reinvigorate the economic and functional aspects of the SAARC organisation.

Ambassador Sarwar expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the government and people of Pakistan, acknowledging their consistent support throughout his tenure. He recognised the proactive and constructive role Pakistan has taken in advancing the core objectives of SAARC, particularly during his time as Secretary-General.

The officials took time to discuss the current state of regional cooperation, emphasising the urgent need for collaborative responses to shared challenges, including climate issues, energy security, and cross-border connectivity. They also exchanged insights on the ongoing security situation in Western Asia, underscoring the interconnected nature of these regional issues.

History of the SAF Games

The South Asian Federation Games originated on 26 November 1981 in Delhi, aiming to foster friendship and goodwill among the peoples of the seven SAARC countries. The inaugural event took place on 17 September 1984 in Kathmandu, Nepal, at the Dasarath Stadium. A total of 373 athletes participated, with 105 representing Nepal, alongside participants from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives, and Pakistan.

SAARC, established in 1985, includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Its secretariat is located in Kathmandu, and the organisation’s goals encompass promoting economic cooperation, regional integration, and development across the South Asian region. The upcoming SAF Games in Pakistan will not only continue the tradition of the event but also serve as a platform for furthering regional unity and collaborative efforts in the face of shared challenges.

Ambassador Sarwar has served as the 15th Secretary-General of SAARC since October 2023 and is expected to complete his term in October 2026. He will carry forward the relationships formed during his tenure while continuing to support the objectives outlined by the organisation.
