Keir Starmer, the outgoing Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, officially announced his resignation on July 20. In a heartfelt speech delivered outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer expressed gratitude and pride in his accomplishments during his time in office. He stated that he was preparing to offer his resignation to King Charles III, marking the end of his leadership and his time in the role.

Starmer highlighted the challenges he faced during his tenure, which began after a historic defeat for the Labour Party in 2019. He noted that the party has transformed significantly under his leadership, culminating in a victory in the general election held in 2024. “In six and a half years, I took our party from a historic defeat to a landslide victory,” Starmer remarked, emphasising the journey of revival.

Describing his role as Prime Minister as the “privilege of my life,” Starmer also remarked on his belief that the nation is in a better place now than it was two years ago. He reflected on the most rewarding aspects of his position, including the opportunity to witness the positive aspects of the country firsthand.

Support for Andy Burnham

During his farewell address, Starmer extended his best wishes to Andy Burnham, his successor, reaffirming his support as Burnham prepares to take on the responsibilities of leadership. Starmer stated, “I wish him every success; he has my full support,” emphasising the collaborative nature of politics.

Starmer took the time to express his appreciation for his family, his team within the Labour Party, and the civil servants at Number 10. He underscored the notion that politics is fundamentally a team effort, thanking the British public for the opportunity to serve in this capacity.

As Starmer prepared to leave, he conveyed optimism about the future and concluded his speech with a sense of pride for the achievements made during his time in office. He left 10 Downing Street with a message of good will and determination.

Transition of Power to Burnham

Following Starmer’s farewell address, he headed to Buckingham Palace to formally tender his resignation to King Charles III and to pass the leadership to Andy Burnham. Burnham’s election as the new leader was confirmed by the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) chair, Shabana Mahmood, during a special conference held in London.

Mahmood noted that Burnham was the only eligible nominee for the position and achieved an impressive tally of 379 nominations. The seemingly straightforward election process underscored the party’s confidence in Burnham’s leadership capabilities.

Upon his selection, Burnham delivered a compelling address outlining his vision and objectives as the incoming Prime Minister. He revealed a definitive five-point plan aimed at reshaping both the Labour Party and British politics. Burnham’s agenda focuses on fostering internal unity, moving away from traditional adversarial political strategies, and promoting a transformative approach to governance.
