The CSR Journal Magazine

President Droupadi Murmu’s recent visit to Moldova marked a significant step in cementing relations between India and Moldova, a visit that is notably the first state visit by an Indian President. During her attendance at the India-Moldova Business Forum in Chisinau on July 20, she underscored the increasing engagement across various sectors, emphasising the importance of political, economic, and cultural connections.

During her speech, President Murmu articulated India’s commitment to nurturing collaboration with Moldova, acknowledging that their partnership is centred on mutual respect and the shared democratic values that have defined their relationship since 1992. She showcased India’s aim to build stronger ties that benefit both nations.

By inviting Moldovan businesses to enter the Indian market, Murmu reiterated her belief in a “transparent, predictable, and investor-friendly business environment” that India can offer. She encouraged the Moldovan business community to leverage the opportunities available in the Indian landscape.

Encouraging Indian Businesses in Moldova

President Murmu did not limit her calls for collaboration to Moldovan businesses alone. She simultaneously urged the Indian delegation to recognise and utilise the talent and strategic position of Moldova within Europe. Her encouragement to Indian enterprises was accompanied by a message on the importance of their enterprise and dedication in building lasting economic partnerships.

She expressed confidence that the discussions at the forum would serve as a foundation for new partnerships and innovative collaborations. The President described the event as a chance to create a “new chapter” in the economic relationship between the two countries, aiming for enhanced cooperation and mutual benefits.

Furthermore, she highlighted the warm relations that have existed since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992, basing their partnership on shared commitments to peace, development, and international cooperation. As India progresses towards its 2047 vision of a developed nation, President Murmu emphasised the necessity for partnerships rooted in trust and common prosperity.

Emphasising Economic Cooperation

One of the pivotal areas of discussion during the forum was the ongoing cooperation in the energy sector. President Murmu announced that Indian companies are currently engaged in the implementation of a significant high-voltage transmission line intended to link Chisinau with Romania. She expressed optimism that this project would enhance Moldova’s energy resilience and connectivity in the region.

In her address, President Murmu noted that Indian firms are keen on participating in Moldova’s development projects, particularly in renewable energy. The sectors highlighted included solar energy, battery storage, smart grids, green hydrogen, and other clean technologies, signalling a broad interest from Indian businesses.

Additionally, President Murmu identified a wide array of sectors with potential for collaboration, including digital technologies, artificial intelligence, cyber-security, fintech, digital public infrastructure, infrastructure development, agriculture, food processing, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and healthcare. She remarked positively on the representation of these sectors at the forum, indicating strong interest in mutual growth.

The business forum was attended by distinguished leaders from both nations’ industries, with expectations of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) forming as fruitful outcomes. These agreements are poised to facilitate enhanced trade and technological exchanges, thereby strengthening the overarching economic relationship between India and Moldova.
