Apple Increases Music Subscription Prices in India

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple has raised the subscription fees for Apple Music and Apple One in India for both new and existing users. The company has cited escalating music licensing costs as the primary reason for this decision. It mentioned that music streaming services are obligated to pay fees to record labels, publishers, and artists in order to make songs available on their platforms. These rising costs have compelled Apple to adjust its pricing structure accordingly.

Despite the increase in subscription prices, Apple has not introduced any new features or additional benefits for users. The step appears to be primarily a reaction to external financial pressures rather than an expansion of services offered.

Details of Price Adjustments

The revised pricing for the Apple Music Individual plan has increased from Rs 119 to Rs 139 per month. The Student plan has seen a minor escalation from Rs 59 to Rs 69 per month. Notably, the Family plan has experienced the most significant hike, with the cost rising from Rs 179 to Rs 229 per month. This plan accommodates up to six family members, allowing each to enjoy personalised music libraries and playlists through Apple’s Family Sharing feature.

Additionally, Apple has also modified the rates for its Apple One subscription bundles, which incorporate multiple Apple services into a single package. The Individual plan has elevated from Rs 175 to Rs 195 per month, while the Family plan has increased from Rs 365 to Rs 445 monthly. The Premier plan has experienced the most substantial bump, now priced at Rs 595 per month compared to its previous rate of Rs 499. Apple One subscriptions encompass services such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and iCloud, with various storage options to suit individual user requirements.

Global Context of Subscription Price Increases

India is not the only country facing Apple’s series of price adjustments for subscription services. Reports suggest that similar increases have also been implemented in markets such as the UK, Europe, and the United States. However, Apple has not publicly addressed these price changes for international markets, leaving many users wondering about the broader strategy.

This price adjustment comes in the wake of other recent price increases affecting Apple hardware. The company had also raised the costs of selected Mac, MacBook, iPad, Apple TV, and HomePod models. Apple linked these increases to higher component costs triggered by a global memory shortage that has been impacting the technology sector.

Furthermore, while iPhones had initially escaped this trend, reports indicate that Apple has subsequently increased prices for iPhone models in Japan, including those from the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 series. This broader context of cost adjustments reflects Apple’s ongoing efforts to manage pricing amid fluctuating market conditions and increasing operational costs.
