Monsoon rains have persistently disrupted normal life across Himachal Pradesh, with an evening report from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) highlighting that 36 roads are currently blocked and 43 drinking water supply schemes have been affected. The adverse weather conditions have complicated efforts to restore essential services and infrastructure.

Mandi district has emerged as the most severely impacted area in terms of road connectivity, reporting eleven blocked roads. Specifically, nine of these roads are located within the Seraj subdivision, with the remaining two in Thalout. Chamba district follows closely, with ten roads obstructed, and restoration work is ongoing in other areas that have also faced similar disruptions.

Disruption of Water Supply and Power Restoration Efforts

The state has recorded a significant degradation in its water supply infrastructure during the day, as the number of disrupted drinking water schemes increased dramatically from twelve in the morning to forty-three by evening. Chamba district has been particularly hard-hit, with Tissa subdivision alone accounting for forty of the affected water supply schemes, demonstrating the scale of the disruption in this region.

Conversely, there has been notable progress in the power sector’s restoration efforts. The number of disrupted distribution transformers (DTRs) experienced a sharp decline, falling from sixty to just five by the evening. This improvement is attributed to the diligent work of personnel from the electricity department, who have been actively engaged in restoring power services amid challenging conditions.

Data from the SEOC emphasises the ongoing challenges faced in Sirmaur district, where heavy rainfall has also caused significant issues. Although authorities have managed to restore connectivity on 149 roads throughout the monsoon season, a concerning total of sixty-one roads remain blocked due to fresh rain-related damage. The district is also focusing on repairing thirty-three affected distribution transformers and twelve disrupted water supply schemes.

Ongoing Preparations and Emergency Responses

State disaster management authorities, in collaboration with district administrations and line departments, continue to operate under a high alert status as monsoon conditions persist across the state. Officials are actively engaged in deploying heavy machinery to clear landslides, restore road connectivity, and repair damaged utilities, ensuring that essential services can be reinstated as swiftly as possible.

Efforts are being prioritised in the most affected areas, where access to basic services has been compromised. The handling of these emergencies reflects a coordinated response from multiple agencies aimed at mitigating the impact of the monsoon rains. Continuous monitoring and assessment of the situation are critical to ensure timely interventions and the safety of residents.
