Navi Mumbai Airport Launches International Operations with First Flight to Abu Dhabi

The CSR Journal Magazine

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) commenced its international operations on July 15, marking a significant milestone in its operational journey. Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), the largest private airport operator in India, facilitated this launch in collaboration with Air India Express. The inaugural flight connects Navi Mumbai directly to Abu Dhabi, which is the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Air India Express route will operate three times a week, bringing NMIA’s international service capabilities into reality in under 200 days following its domestic operations commencement on December 25, 2025. This achievement positions NMIA as a vital addition to the aviation landscape in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), thereby enhancing connectivity amid one of India’s most populous and economically active areas.

According to the latest announcement, the new flight service provides a convenient direct link between India and the UAE, reflecting the collaborative efforts of various government bodies, aviation regulators, airline companies, and airport stakeholders. This initiative aims to establish NMIA as the second international gateway for MMR, complementing existing facilities.

Statements from Key Stakeholders

Nipun Aggarwal, Chairman of Air India Express, expressed enthusiasm for the new route: “We are delighted to introduce international services from Navi Mumbai to Abu Dhabi, which opens a new gateway for travellers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.” He noted that Navi Mumbai serves as a crucial component of their dual-airport strategy, which integrates smoothly with the existing network from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

Arun Bansal, CEO of AAHL, commented on the significance of this launch, calling it a transition into a new phase for NMIA. He extended gratitude to Air India Express for their collaboration, stating, “This inaugural flight is a remarkable achievement, and we appreciate the vital support we have received from state and central government agencies.” Bansal further highlighted the airport’s commitment to providing seamless operations and an exceptional travel experience.

He added that as they explore partnerships with more airlines and destinations, NMIA aims to enhance its stature as a preferred location for international air travel. The airport has already connected with 46 domestic destinations and has catered to over 2.3 million passengers, managing around 150 air traffic movements on a daily basis.

Cargo Capabilities and Future Prospects

The inaugural flight also marked the airport’s first global perishable export shipment, establishing NMIA as a new hub for high-value and time-sensitive cargo. This development is expected to enhance international market access for Indian exporters and augment NMIA’s burgeoning cargo capabilities.

The service to Abu Dhabi is just the beginning, with several other international routes planned in the future. As NMIA expands its network and partnerships with different airlines, it is set to play a crucial role in boosting Mumbai’s aviation capabilities while supporting India’s growing needs for international connectivity—be it in trade or tourism.

The strategic initiation of international flights enhances NMIA’s operational profile, setting the stage for ongoing growth in air transport in western India. Overall, this development underscores NMIA’s importance in shaping the future of aviation in the region.
