India and Tanzania have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral ties, with Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi reviewing the full spectrum of cooperation and identifying new opportunities in sectors including the blue economy, tourism, technology, healthcare and education.

President Mwinyi, who was on an official visit to India from July 17 to 20 at the invitation of Vice President Radhakrishnan, also held meetings with senior Indian leaders and attended the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras convocation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit imparted fresh momentum to the India-Tanzania Strategic Partnership.

Leaders Review Bilateral Cooperation

According to an MEA statement, President Mwinyi, who was accompanied by First Lady Mariyam Mwinyi, held bilateral discussions with Vice President Radhakrishnan during his visit.

“Both leaders reviewed the full spectrum of India-Tanzania relations and explored new avenues to expand the bilateral cooperation in areas such as blue economy, tourism, technology, health and education,” the statement said.

The two sides also took stock of the growing economic relationship, with the MEA noting that they “positively assessed recent expansion in bilateral trade and investment linkages and development partnership”. During the meeting, President Mwinyi invited Vice President Radhakrishnan to undertake an official visit to Tanzania, an invitation that was accepted.

Focus on Education and Development Partnership

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met President Mwinyi on Sunday, with discussions centred on the broad development partnership between the two countries, including the establishment of IIT Madras Zanzibar as a centre of excellence for higher education in Africa.

The MEA said President Mwinyi expressed appreciation for India’s support in setting up IIT Madras Zanzibar, as well as its assistance in Tanzania’s water infrastructure projects and human resource development initiatives.

The engagement came as IIT Madras Zanzibar completed two years since its establishment in October 2023, marking a significant milestone in educational cooperation between the two countries.

President Mwinyi Attends IIT Madras Convocation

During his visit, President Mwinyi attended the 63rd Convocation Ceremony of IIT Madras as the chief guest on Friday.

He toured the institute’s campus, laboratories, Startup Incubation Cell and Research Park, where he interacted with faculty members and students. He also unveiled the master plan for the permanent campus of IIT Madras Zanzibar during the convocation ceremony.

The MEA said the visit built upon Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s landmark State Visit to India in October 2023, when the two countries elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership.

“The successful visit of President Mwinyi has imparted a renewed momentum to the India-Tanzania partnership, and opened a new chapter in India’s cooperation with Zanzibar, paving the way for mutually beneficial economic, technology and educational collaboration,” the ministry said.
