Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the recent Russian strikes on Kyiv during his first official visit to Serbia. This visit comes amidst ongoing concerns regarding the effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defences amid persistent missile and drone attacks from Russia. Overnight, four individuals, including a child, lost their lives in the strikes that targeted the capital and its vicinity.

The Ukrainian President highlighted that the situation remains dire, citing a significant missile strike that involved ballistic missiles aimed at Ukraine’s infrastructure. Zelenskyy described the attacks as a relentless assault on civilian areas, which has become a hallmark of the conflict.

During a press conference, he expressed the need for increased military support, particularly in the form of air defence systems. The provision of the Patriot missiles, which are critical for intercepting ballistic threats, has reportedly decreased compared to previous years, causing concern for the Ukrainian military’s defensive capabilities.

Discussions in Belgrade

While in Serbia, Zelenskyy met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to discuss bilateral relations, efforts towards European Union membership, and the ongoing conflict with Russia. Vucic emphasised Serbia’s commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity, despite the country’s close ties with Moscow and its refusal to impose sanctions against Russia since the conflict began.

Vucic referred to Ukraine as a “friendly nation” and welcomed Zelenskyy as the first Ukrainian president to visit Serbia in eight years. This meeting reflects Serbia’s unique position in Europe, as it balances its historical connections with Russia alongside its aspirations for closer integration with the EU.

The two leaders underlined the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation, especially in these challenging times. Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s need for more defensive capabilities to counter the ongoing assaults, stressing the necessity for Western allies to expedite military support.

Ukrainian Strikes on Russian Targets

In response to the sustained attacks, Ukraine’s military reported successful strikes on Russian oil facilities, including facilities in the Krasnodar and Samara regions. This was part of Ukraine’s ongoing strategy to target energy infrastructures within Russia, aimed at disrupting supply lines and causing shortages in fuel.

Following a recent Russian attack that resulted in casualties, including a family in Brovary, the Ukrainian air force successfully intercepted a significant number of drones and missiles. Authorities revealed that they had shot down 135 of the 151 drones launched by Russia, alongside intercepting multiple ballistic missiles.

Zelenskyy’s administration has been vocal in its calls for further enhancements to air defense technologies, drawing attention to the challenges posed by the diminished flow of air defence missiles from allies. This necessity has been amplified by the ongoing war and its implications for the security of Ukrainian cities.

Following the latest military exchanges, Zelenskyy made public statements seeking increased sanctions on Russia to hinder missile production and improve Ukraine’s interception capabilities. He also advocated for the use of advanced surveillance and targeting systems to increase the effectiveness of Ukrainian military operations within Russian territory.
