China has expressed strong objections to Japan’s newly released defence white paper, which identifies Beijing as Japan’s most significant strategic challenge. This document, consisting of nearly 600 pages, was approved by the Japanese cabinet on August 6, 2026. In it, Japan outlines concerns over China’s expanding military activities, asserting that these represent the foremost security threat facing the country.

In conjunction with the white paper’s release, Japan also introduced a new anti-ship missile that boasts a range of approximately 1,000 km. The document highlights the necessity for Japan to reinforce its defence capabilities through collaboration with allies and other nations that share similar interests.

Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi stated in the preface of the white paper that the aim is to enhance public understanding of Japan’s defence and security. He noted the evolving security landscape in the Indo-Pacific and emphasised the need for resilience in the face of crises.

China’s Response to Japan’s Claims

In response to the white paper, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jing accused Japan of perpetuating unfounded allegations regarding China. He condemned the document for allegedly meddling in issues related to Taiwan, which Beijing claims as an integral part of its territory. Lin articulated that the Taiwan matter is strictly an internal Chinese issue and that Japan has no authority to influence it.

Additionally, Lin reaffirmed China’s historical claims over the Diaoyu Dao islands, which are administered by Japan but contested by China. The Chinese coast guard routinely conducts patrols in the vicinity to assert China’s claim to these islands.

Emphasising its stance, the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that it has formally relayed its discontent to Japan regarding the grievances outlined in the defence white paper. This recent diplomatic spat marks a continuation of heightened tensions between the two nations.

Escalating Tensions and Regional Security Concerns

The tensions between China and Japan have seen a notable increase following remarks made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. In November 2025, Takaichi indicated that a potential crisis in Taiwan could pose a dire threat to Japan’s survival, suggesting that the Japanese Self-Defence Forces might need to intervene alongside the United States. This statement angered Beijing, further straining bilateral relations.

The white paper underscores Japan’s perspective on regional stability, particularly concerning Taiwan’s future. Japan stated that the security environment around Taiwan is critical for the international community and advocated for vigilance in monitoring the situation.

Regarding nuclear strategy, the white paper reiterated Japan’s longstanding non-nuclear principles. However, Defence Minister Koizumi appears to be opening the floor for discussions on Japan’s nuclear policies, suggesting that the topic cannot be overlooked given the current geopolitical climate. This development could potentially reshape Japan’s approach to its defence strategies in the future.

The recent exchanges illustrate the ongoing complexities in China-Japan relations, with both sides staunchly defending their positions amid a deteriorating regional security environment. While Japan aims to enhance its security framework, China remains resolute in rejecting Japan’s characterisations in the defence white paper.
