TMC Leader Found Hiding Under Bed Amidst Protests Over Alleged Housing Fraud

The CSR Journal Magazine

A local leader of the Trinamool Congress, identified as Sahidul Miah, was discovered hiding under a bed by police after he allegedly attempted to evade irate villagers who were demanding refunds related to a fraudulent housing scheme. The incident transpired in the Jorparki Gram Panchayat area of Mathabhanga I Block and was captured on video, which has since gained widespread traction on social media platforms.

Residents accuse Miah of soliciting money from them under the guise of providing government housing allotments as part of a government scheme. According to various sources, villagers claimed that the collected funds were referred to as “cut money” and that no actual benefits were rendered to them. Tensions began to escalate on May 25, when a group of women staged a protest outside his residence, demanding the return of their money.

On the following Wednesday, the situation escalated further, with a larger assembly of individuals congregating outside Miah’s house, effectively trapping him inside. As the protest intensified, Miah allegedly retreated to a bedroom and attempted to conceal himself beneath a cot to avoid confrontation.

Police Intervention and Ongoing Investigation

Upon receiving alerts about the unrest, law enforcement officials from a nearby police station arrived at the scene. They discovered Miah hiding under the bed and subsequently extracted him to ensure his safety. He was transported to the Mathabhanga police station for further proceedings.

According to local accounts, Miah allegedly collected bribes ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 from numerous beneficiaries, leading to an estimated total of Rs 8 lakh collected. Residents asserted that these payments were made in exchange for promises of government housing allocations that never materialised. One villager expressed on India Today TV that Miah had taken money from impoverished families, which they now desperately sought to retrieve.

Authorities confirmed that an investigation into the extortion allegations against Miah is currently underway. The incident highlights the growing discontent among residents due to unfulfilled promises and alleged misconduct by local political figures.

Broader Context of Political Unrest in West Bengal

This incident occurs in the context of a closer scrutiny of Trinamool Congress leaders in West Bengal, amid serious allegations ranging from corruption to extortion and various criminal activities. The recent wave of arrests within the political party has further escalated the situation.

On the same day as Miah’s confrontation, police in Kolkata took into custody a municipal councillor, Biswajit Mondal, who faces charges of assaulting and molesting a woman. The arrest followed a complaint filed at the Regent Park police station, which alleges that Mondal verbally abused the victim and issued threats after the state government’s recent change.

This arrest is part of a broader crackdown on civic representatives, several of whom have been implicated in disputes related to extortion and intimidation. In separate incidents, councillors Arijit Das Thakur and Sachin Singh were arrested on June 2 for claims of extortion, and Mahesh Kumar Sharma was similarly taken into custody the following day on related charges.
