The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has initiated a significant statewide protest targeting the Congress-led government in Himachal Pradesh. This agitation commenced with a large gathering of party supporters outside Oak Over, the official residence of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, located in Shimla on 5 August 2026. Thousands of BJP workers participated in what was described as a ‘gherao,’ driven by allegations of corruption, political vendetta, and a decline in law and order. Demonstrators voiced their concerns over what they termed as “anti-people” policies emanating from the current administration.

Allegations Against the Congress Government

The protest was spearheaded by Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, alongside BJP Himachal Pradesh president Dr Rajeev Bindal. Various party MLAs, MPs, and elected representatives from across the state were also in attendance. Thakur addressed the crowd, claiming that the Congress government had shifted to a strategy of “closure and disruption,” particularly in relation to local body elections, revealing what he described as fear of electoral defeat.

Thakur asserted that the BJP had to seek intervention from the High Court and the Supreme Court to ensure that these elections were conducted. He maintained that the results of previous local body elections indicated increasing dissatisfaction among the electorate. Furthermore, he alleged the Congress government was engaging in malicious actions against BJP leaders, including lodging false criminal cases against them.

Amid concerns regarding the safety of journalists and citizens voicing dissent, Thakur stated that the BJP would be vocal about these issues during the forthcoming Assembly session, scheduled to commence on 21 August 2026. He highlighted a perceived rise in criminal activities, citing recent murder cases in Shimla and Bilaspur as indicative of the declining law and order situation.

Future Actions and Ongoing Agitation

In outlining the next steps of the protest, Dr Rajeev Bindal declared that the demonstration on Wednesday represented the outset of a more extensive movement against the Congress government. He announced plans for constant protests in each assembly constituency and Mandal within the state, affirming that the BJP’s resolve to challenge the current government would reach every village and community.

Bindal further accused the Congress of failing to uphold its electoral promises, which included commitments to financial support for women and job creation. He expressed concern that many welfare schemes and institutions established under the previous BJP administration had been dismantled. Bindal described the present government as neglecting various population segments, including women, youth, farmers, and pensioners.

Amid these accusations, Bindal highlighted an increase in the financial burden on citizens due to rising tariffs for electricity, diesel, and cement. He alleged that corruption and nepotism had become entrenched within the government, prompting the BJP to galvanise public sentiment against the current ruling party.
