Mamata Banerjee, leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, has launched a vigorous attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government, accusing it of various forms of political oppression. In a video address to party supporters and the public, she alleged that her party members are facing intimidation and described the current environment as a threat to democracy. Banerjee expressed a strong desire for a collective movement to counter the alleged actions of the ruling party, urging people to unify for this cause.

According to Banerjee, numerous cases have been filed against TMC workers and party structures such as panchayats, municipalities, and district councils have been reportedly compromised. She stated, “Thousands of cases have been done on our workers,” and encouraged citizens to rise against these injustices. She emphasised the need for a ‘mass movement,’ underlining that the political landscape has deteriorated significantly in West Bengal.

Criticism of Culture and Heritage

During her address, Banerjee lamented over what she deemed the transformation of West Bengal into a place devoid of its historical and cultural values, saying, “They have turned Sonar Bangla into a prison.” She expressed concern for the state’s legacy of peace and harmony, questioning the current state of affairs in the wake of BJP’s governance. Allegations were made regarding disrespect towards historical figures such as Subhash Chandra Bose and Rabindranath Tagore, with Banerjee highlighting that some BJP members are reportedly unaware of the state’s cultural ethos.

The former Chief Minister also warned the youth about the risks of political negligence, stating that they should remain vigilant and aware of the circumstances unfolding in Bengal. Banerjee’s remarks insinuated that the BJP’s promises prior to their rise to power were unfulfilled, reflecting her frustration with the state of governance and the political narrative being shaped in the region.

Furthermore, she addressed the police’s role in the current political climate, maintaining respect for the force but criticising certain personnel for allegedly employing intimidation tactics against political adversaries. Banerjee articulated her concern that this misuse of authority is undermining the fundamental tenets of justice and fairness.

Concerns Over Welfare Workers and Women’s Issues

Banerjee also raised significant issues regarding the treatment of Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers in the region. She claimed these individuals have faced humiliation, asserting that their working conditions are unacceptable. This statement highlights a broader concern for welfare workers who are crucial to public health and community services. Banerjee further alleged that she herself has been targeted with defamatory language, and claims regarding withheld payments for her writings were insinuated to be politically motivated.

In her call to action, she vowed to reach out to the family of an ASHA worker who had reportedly passed away. Alleging that her movement has been obstructed, Banerjee indicated that she would ensure her team would speak to the concerned family. She also raised issues surrounding women’s rights, referring to various instances where women’s safety has been compromised, reportedly calling for better protections and support for vulnerable groups.

Banerjee concluded her address by urging the public to speak out against suppressive practices and reiterated the importance of solidarity among citizens. Her appeal was directed toward the conscience of the populace, inviting them to resist political quietude and engage actively in safeguarding democratic values in the state.
