Mirabai Chanu Leads Weightlifting Medal Success for India at Commonwealth Games 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

India experienced a triumphant fourth day at the Commonwealth Games 2026, primarily due to the exceptional contributions from its weightlifting squad. Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu showcased her prowess by securing her third consecutive Commonwealth gold medal in the women’s 48kg category. Her total lift of 190kg, comprising 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, further established her as a formidable competitor while earning India its first gold at the Glasgow Games.

Chanu’s remarkable performance not only led to individual accolades but also propelled India’s overall medal tally to four, including one gold, two silver, and one bronze. This success marked a significant advancement, with India rising to eighth place in the tournament standings.

Rishikanta Singh added to the accolades by securing silver in the men’s 60kg competition. He matched the Commonwealth Games snatch record with a lift of 121kg and finished with an overall total of 264kg. Singh’s achievement is historic, as he became the first male weightlifter from Manipur to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Boxing Team Sees Successful Performances

In addition to weightlifting, India’s boxing team delivered commendable results with notable performances from Jadumani Singh Mandengbam and Preeti Pawar. Mandengbam claimed a decisive victory against Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman in the men’s 55kg Round of 16, winning by a score of 5-0. His performance underscored his composure as he landed effective punches despite an aggressive start from his opponent.

Meanwhile, Preeti Pawar also progressed to the quarterfinals by achieving a second-round stoppage against Malawi’s Deborah Mtenje in the women’s 54kg category. The 22-year-old dominated from the outset, ultimately prompting the referee to stop the contest with 47 seconds remaining in the second round. Pawar is now one victory away from securing a Commonwealth Games medal and will face Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde next.

These boxing triumphs added to the overall excitement for the Indian contingent, showcasing the rising standard of Indian athletes across various disciplines.

Setbacks in Other Sports for Indian Athletes

Furthermore, Tapan Mohanty concluded his involvement in artistic gymnastics with a 15th-place finish in the men’s all-around final, achieving a score of 70.100 points. His consistent performance, particularly on the vault and parallel bars, highlighted his abilities despite missing medal opportunities.

India’s women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team faced another disappointing defeat, this time losing 21-4 against Scotland, marking their second consecutive loss in the tournament.

In swimming, although the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team managed to reach the final, they were unable to replicate their earlier success, finishing sixth in a competitive race. The final time of 7:29.84 was insufficient for a medal despite a strong effort from the relay team.
