West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited Sri Aurobindo Bhavan in Kolkata on August 15, coinciding with both Independence Day and the birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo. This visit marks a notable event, particularly as it is the first time in fifty years that a Chief Minister has visited the historic site. Adhikari expressed his pride in visiting the institution, highlighting its importance to the cultural and historical fabric of the state.

During his remarks, he acknowledged Sri Aurobindo’s vital role in shaping nationalist and revolutionary ideology in India. The Chief Minister emphasised the significance of the location not just as a historical site, but as a symbol of the region’s rich heritage. “I am here due to the people of Bengal,” he stated, as he extended greetings to the followers of Sri Aurobindo and the people of West Bengal on these important occasions.

National Celebrations and Initiatives

Adhikari announced that various programmes are being conducted across the state to commemorate Independence Day, including events related to Sri Aurobindo’s legacy. He took the opportunity to express gratitude towards Biswajit Ganguly and his team for their efforts in preserving the institution despite numerous challenges. The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to further honouring Sri Aurobindo, stating that a proposal is being formulated to act on this intent.

In his visit, Adhikari praised Dr Anirban Ganguly for promoting nationalist thought and presenting narratives about India’s history through the Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation. Highlighting the importance of grassroots engagement with historical figures, he noted that such initiatives are crucial for instilling a sense of pride and identity among the populace.

Reflecting on his past roles as a councillor, MLA, and MP, Adhikari mentioned that this visit to Sri Aurobindo Bhavan had been long overdue, as he had never had the opportunity to come to the site earlier. He underscored the historical significance of the venue, adding that it is a central and busy area in Kolkata rather than a distant location.

Personal Reflections on Sri Aurobindo

During the visit, Adhikari explored the children’s library within the Bhavan and shared personal anecdotes related to Sri Aurobindo’s birthplace. He referred to prior visits to ‘Rishidham’ in Tamluk, where the notable revolutionary Matangini Hazra was martyred. On past Independence Days, he had interacted with followers of Sri Aurobindo at these locations, further cementing his connection to the historical figure.

The Chief Minister elaborated on the various contributions made by Sri Aurobindo, including his revolutionary thoughts and his enduring legacy. He remarked on the significance of honouring such influential figures, mentioning his intent to advocate for greater recognition and resources dedicated to Sri Aurobindo’s contributions.

Concluding his visit, Adhikari noted that his attendance at a programme hosted by the Governor at Lok Bhavan at 6 pm further underscores the day’s importance. He expressed his honour at being part of the celebrations that intertwine the essence of independence and the enduring legacy of Sri Aurobindo.
