Former Amazon Vice President Ethan Evans has highlighted that achieving promotions within Amazon is not merely about job performance. Engineers aspiring to advance in their careers must exemplify qualities such as ownership, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to simplify processes for colleagues. Evans, who spent 15 years at the company and oversaw promotions for over 270 engineers, outlined the key traits for engineers aiming to progress from Level 5 (L5) to Level 6 (L6) and eventually Level 7 (L7).

For L5 engineers, the initial criterion is consistency in performance. According to Evans, employees must showcase their ability to complete projects independently, manage incomplete information, and willingly undertake less appealing tasks without becoming challenging to manage. This foundation in reliability is crucial for any subsequent advancement.

Once an L5 engineer establishes a solid performance record, the requirements shift. To progress to L6, employees are encouraged to exceed their assigned responsibilities. They should not only contribute helpful ideas but also take leadership roles in significant projects and identify issues that may escape the attention of senior leadership.

Expectations at Higher Levels of Responsibility

The transition from L6 to L7 is notably more demanding. Staff and principal engineers at this level are expected to handle intricate and ambiguous problems with minimal oversight while discerning how their technical choices influence the broader business context. Moreover, they must liaise effectively with teams outside their direct group, collaborate with senior executives, and communicate with non-technical staff.

Evans emphasised the importance of not only technical skills but also leadership abilities among higher-level engineers. Delivering sophisticated systems while guiding others through code is a fundamental requirement. This necessitates a balance between technical prowess and leadership capabilities, particularly when influencing team dynamics and fostering collaboration.

Evans noted that engineers may transition into management roles at various stages in their careers. While some may choose to switch at L5, others might wait until they reach L6 or L7. Delaying this shift allows them to accumulate more technical expertise, although it is imperative for senior engineers entering management to avoid micromanagement.

Impact of Promotions on Employee Well-being

While Amazon’s promotional structure rewards performance and leadership, anecdotal evidence from employees suggests that elevated positions often come with increased pressures. An analyst, aged 26, shared concerns on Grapevine about feeling “completely trapped” despite a salary increase that tripled his previous earnings. He reported working 12 to 15 hours daily while juggling family obligations and financial responsibilities.

Another employee, Eshaan Jain, a senior product manager in the United States, disclosed to Business Insider that his total compensation is approximately $285,000. Nevertheless, he expressed a lack of financial security, with a substantial portion of his income going towards a $5,000 mortgage along with healthcare, utilities, childcare, and other expenses.

In India, a UX/UI designer recently gained attention online for expressing frustration over substantial tax deductions from their April salary. The employee noted that the TDS amount exceeded their father’s final salary before retirement, describing the situation as feeling “punished for earning well.” This highlights the complexities and challenges that come with higher earnings within the organisation.
