On August 15, 2026, BJP leader Anirban Ganguly expressed his approval of the decision to incorporate the contributions of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee into the educational curriculum of West Bengal. He asserted that the state’s existence is significantly linked to the sacrifices made by Mookerjee, who is regarded as the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.

Ganguly emphasised that, despite Mookerjee’s crucial role in the political and social landscape of India, he has remained largely sidelined in educational narratives. He called for Mookerjee’s impact on opposing separatism to be integrated into the lessons taught to younger generations.

“He was completely marginalised across every level and dimension of the education sector,” Ganguly stated. “It is precisely because of him that West Bengal exists today, or rather, because of his sacrifices,” he added, underscoring Mookerjee’s importance in the state’s history.

Role in National Unity Highlighted

Ganguly further elaborated on Mookerjee’s contributions to the concept of national unity. He claimed that Mookerjee was pivotal in challenging separatist ideologies and promoting the idea of a united India. His advocacy for the principle of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ aimed to ensure that Jammu & Kashmir remained an integral part of the Indian nation.

The remarks from Ganguly followed an announcement made by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The Chief Minister indicated that the state Education Department would be incorporating dedicated chapters focusing on Mookerjee’s contributions beginning with the next academic session.

This decision was finalised during the inaugural meeting of a special committee formed to plan various programmes in celebration of Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary. Ganguly’s statements reflect a significant shift in how history may soon be taught in West Bengal schools.

Statue Celebrating Mookerjee’s Legacy Planned

In addition to curricular changes, Anirban Ganguly discussed another initiative aimed at honouring Mookerjee’s legacy. Plans are underway to erect a 125-foot statue dedicated to him, which Ganguly described as a potential landmark of stature. He mentioned that it would serve not only as a monument but also as a site where people could gather to pay their respects.

“Much like the ‘Statue of Unity,’ this statue will be more than just a physical structure; it will stand as a world-class landmark,” Ganguly said. This initiative is expected to attract visitors from across Bengal and beyond, contributing to the state’s cultural identity.

The proposed statue is part of broader commemorative programmes being developed by the state government to celebrate Mookerjee’s contributions on the occasion of his 125th birth anniversary. These efforts are intended to foster greater awareness of his role in Indian history among the populace.
