Lovlina Borgohain’s performance at the Commonwealth Games not only earned her a silver medal but also garnered praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her actions beyond the boxing arena. The athlete drew attention to a misrepresentation of the Indian flag that was displayed in a Glasgow restaurant, prompting her to take action during a celebratory moment.

During a meeting with Commonwealth Games medallists at his residence in New Delhi on Sunday, Modi discussed this incident with Lovlina. He humorously inquired about her interactions with the restaurant staff, asking, “What happened, you were fighting with that restaurant guy?” Lovlina responded with laughter, explaining her rationale behind raising the issue of the inaccurate flag display.

As the boxer elaborated, she stated, “We had such a good performance and it was the last day of the Games. It was a happy occasion sir, we were celebrating and I didn’t like it when I saw the distorted flag. I politely told them and they have made the changes also.” This response illustrated her sense of nationalism, reflecting her commitment to the integrity of the Indian flag.

India’s Performance Celebrated

Modi acknowledged Lovlina’s vigilance and noted that her actions coincided with a momentous celebration, particularly as India secured fourth place in the Glasgow Games with a total of 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze. The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of maintaining the dignity of the national flag even during joyful moments, highlighting Lovlina’s response as exemplary.

“To be able to recognise the significance of that map at a time when you were celebrating, I can tell you truthfully, that video was not ordinary. It will be remembered by people for a very long time,” Modi remarked, commending Lovlina for her dedication to representing her country accurately.

This incident became an emblematic moment during the meeting, showcasing the athletes’ unwavering commitment to their nation while celebrating their hard-earned achievements at the Games. Lovlina’s actions resonated deeply, reflecting a collective pride among Indian sporting representatives.

Mirabai Chanu Shares Emotional Journey

Weightlifting champion Mirabai Chanu enriched the dialogue by sharing her personal experiences during the Glasgow event. Her triumph in the women’s 48kg category, marked by a Games-record lift of 190kg, was a moment of exhilaration yet tinged with emotion. Prime Minister Modi engaged with her about the tears she shed on the podium, seeking to understand the feelings behind that moment.

Mirabai expressed, “I was very happy and emotional in that moment. I was crying because I missed a medal in the Paris Olympics by one kilogram. I had faced a lot in these last four years, battling injuries and some family problems too.” Her recollection illustrated the emotional weight athletes carry and the struggles they overcome to reach their goals.

She emphasised that hearing the national anthem while witnessing the flag rise filled her with an overwhelming sense of pride, making it challenging to contain her tears of joy. This emotional depth added a personal touch to the interaction, resonating with the experiences of many athletes striving for excellence.
