Microsoft Launches $2.5 Billion AI Venture to Help Businesses Deploy Artificial Intelligence

The CSR Journal Magazine

Microsoft has launched a new operating business, Microsoft Frontier Company, as it seeks to accelerate artificial intelligence adoption among large enterprises and help organisations generate measurable returns from their AI investments.

Announced on Thursday, the new venture is backed by USD 2.5 billion and more than 6,000 engineers, industry specialists and AI professionals. The company will work with organisations to select, deploy and manage AI systems tailored to their business needs, while allowing them to use models from multiple providers rather than relying on a single platform.

Microsoft Targets Enterprise AI Adoption

The technology giant said Frontier Company has been established to help businesses navigate the growing complexity of AI deployment as organisations increasingly adopt multiple AI models for different tasks.

Rather than focusing solely on Microsoft’s own technologies, the new business will support the use of AI models from Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic and open-source providers, depending on customer requirements.

According to Microsoft, Frontier Company will assist enterprises in identifying suitable AI tools, integrating them with internal data systems and deploying AI solutions designed to deliver tangible business outcomes.

The company said customers will retain ownership of the AI applications and systems developed using their proprietary data.

New Unit Built Around ‘Forward Deployment Engineering’

A key component of Frontier Company’s operating model is what Microsoft describes as “forward deployment engineering”.

Under this approach, Microsoft will place its engineers and AI specialists directly within customer organisations to help design, implement and refine AI systems based on specific operational needs.

Instead of acting solely as advisers, Microsoft’s teams will work alongside businesses to select AI models, integrate them with existing technology infrastructure and optimise their performance over time.

Most of the 6,000 professionals assigned to Frontier Company are existing Microsoft employees, although the company plans to expand its workforce further. The new business will be led by Rodrigo Kede Lima, Microsoft’s former President for Asia.

Shift In Microsoft’s AI Strategy

The launch of Frontier Company also reflects an evolution in Microsoft’s broader AI strategy as businesses increasingly seek flexibility in choosing AI providers.

In an interview with Reuters, Judson Althoff, Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft’s Commercial Business division, acknowledged that the company had initially tied its Copilot platform too closely to OpenAI’s models.

“Three years ago, when we built Copilot, we made a mistake by binding it to OpenAI models only,” Althoff told Reuters.

He said enterprise customers now want the ability to move between different AI models as the technology landscape evolves, rather than being dependent on a single provider.

The shift has gained momentum as competing AI systems, including Google’s Gemini and China’s DeepSeek, have narrowed the gap with earlier market leaders, encouraging organisations to adopt a multi-model approach.

Focus On Flexibility And Data Privacy

Microsoft argued that the combination of proprietary enterprise data and access to multiple AI models offers greater long-term value than reliance on any individual model.

The company said Frontier Company will help businesses take advantage of that flexibility while ensuring AI systems are tailored to their specific requirements.

Microsoft also sought to address concerns surrounding data privacy, stating that customer information used to build AI solutions would remain private and would not be used to train the company’s own AI models.

The launch underscores Microsoft’s belief that the next phase of competition in artificial intelligence will be driven not only by advances in AI models but also by the ability to help businesses successfully integrate the technology into their day-to-day operations.
