Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi has publicly targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging significant inactivity during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Gogoi claimed that Shah “woke up from his ‘Kumbhakaran-like sleep’” only shortly before the session was due to conclude. The remarks were made during a press conference on August 13 in New Delhi, where Gogoi questioned Shah’s failure to participate in critical discussions throughout the session.

Gogoi’s assertions came in the context of ongoing discussions surrounding the police action during a rally at Jantar Mantar on July 20. He expressed that Shah’s absence was particularly noticeable as the Opposition repeatedly sought his input on these matters. “For 15 days, the Home Minister was missing,” Gogoi remarked, indicating frustration over the lack of engagement from the minister during crucial debates.

In his address, Gogoi insisted that Shah framing his readiness for a discussion two days prior to the session’s conclusion was insufficient. He challenged the Home Minister, asking where he had been during the actual deliberations. Gogoi highlighted the disconnect between parliamentary proceedings and the government’s response to pressing issues.

Government’s Avoidance of Responsibilities Alleged

Gaurav Gogoi further accused the government of evading its responsibilities by continuously calling for further discussions, which he described as a tactic to avoid meaningful engagement in the House. He suggested that the administration’s approach was more about creating excuses rather than contributing to the legislative process.

During the press conference, Gogoi pointed out that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah were noticeably absent during key discussions, describing their conduct as “scared and intimidated.” He stated that this pattern was unprecedented, marking a significant departure from previous sessions where the ruling government had maintained a visible presence.

Gogoi’s comments reflected broader frustrations among Opposition parties, who felt sidelined during important debates. He underscored that the government’s apparent reluctance to engage stemmed from a desire to avoid controversial topics and criticisms that could be raised during discussions.

Shah’s Response and Lok Sabha Adjournment

Amit Shah responded to the contentious atmosphere in Parliament on August 12, stating his willingness to answer all questions related to the recent student protests concerning the NEET exam paper leak. He encouraged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to coordinate with Opposition members to schedule dedicated time for the issue. Shah reiterated that the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, had previously been discussed, implying that the Opposition had missed the opportunity to raise concerns at that time.

Despite Shah’s assertions of readiness to engage, the Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die shortly after commencing the final day of the Monsoon Session. This adjournment occurred amidst ongoing protests from the Opposition, which disrupted proceedings and reflected continuing tensions within the parliamentary environment.
