Sukhbir Singh Badal, leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal and former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, was reportedly attacked by a Nihang inside a gurudwara in Nanded, Maharashtra, on August 13. Local police confirmed that Badal sustained injuries to his hand and was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has announced that an investigation will be conducted into the assault on Badal. Early reports indicated that the Chief Minister reached out to Badal via phone to check on his well-being, and was informed that Badal’s condition remains stable.

The police apprehended the alleged assailant shortly after the incident. Chief Minister Fadnavis has requested a comprehensive account of the occurrence from the Nanded Superintendent of Police. The investigation will seek to uncover the motives behind the attack.

Previous Attack on Badal

This assault is not the first time that Badal has faced danger. In December 2024, he was targeted in an attempted shooting at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. At that time, he was engaged in performing ‘seva’, a term denoting service, when the assailant attempted to fire at him but was neutralised before any harm could be inflicted.

The 2024 incident transpired following Badal being labelled a ‘tankhaiya’, or guilty of religious misconduct, by the Akal Takht due to actions taken by the SAD-led Punjab government from 2007 to 2017. This declaration added tension and division among followers during the ceremony.

Following the December incident, SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia openly condemned the Punjab Police for their handling of security measures, raising significant questions regarding the safety protocols in place for prominent political figures.
