Kiren Rijiju, the Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister, has asserted that the Opposition is evading a discussion pertaining to the NEET paper leak issue. He alleged that leaders of the INDIA bloc shifted from an initial agreement to debate in Parliament by imposing conditions and making excuses as time went on. Rijiju indicated that he had reached out to various Opposition leaders to facilitate a structured debate, noting that initial conversations had been promising.

The Minister expressed hope that a resolution could be achieved through discussions with Congress and other Opposition members, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi had affirmed that comprehensive measures would be implemented to ensure the safety and security of students. Rijiju stressed that any deliberation regarding paper leaks should encompass incidents from all states, rather than solely focusing on central agencies.

According to Rijiju, it is crucial that discussions consider the broader context of paper leaks across various regions, emphasising that these incidents have occurred in multiple states and through central examination agencies alike. He conveyed the government’s commitment to update Parliament and the nation about the actions taken following the NEET paper leak, including re-examinations and immediate results declaration.

Support for Government Action from BJP MPs

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey supported the government’s position, stating that leading legal counsel would be engaged to ensure the strict prosecution of those charged in connection with the NEET paper leak. Dubey underscored the importance of maintaining the integrity of educational pathways for students aspiring to enter prestigious institutions.

This parliamentary debate and its underlying tensions manifested dramatically, with a confrontation occurring between NDA and INDIA bloc MPs at Makar Dwar. Opposition members staged protests against Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan concerning the ongoing NEET paper leak controversy, while members of the NDA accused the Opposition of obstructing debate.

Amid the heightened tensions, an incident involving CPI(M) MP John Brittas and BJP leader Arun Singh escalated, necessitating intervention by Parliament security to separate the groups. During the confrontation, slogans were exchanged between Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and BJP leaders, reflecting the charged atmosphere within the House.

Prime Minister’s Response and Ongoing Protests

Amid ongoing tensions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a statement focused on the significance of safeguarding the future of the youth. He announced the formation of fast-track courts to expedite legal proceedings pertaining to paper leak cases. Modi expressed a commitment to taking all necessary actions to protect student interests, asserting that those who jeopardise the future of young people will face strict consequences.

In response to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi called for the immediate dismissal of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, accusing the government of failing to address systemic issues within the education system. Gandhi asserted that the current administration has perpetuated a culture of neglect regarding educational integrity.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh echoed these sentiments, criticising the Prime Minister for resorting to social media instead of engaging directly in parliamentary debates. Ramesh suggested that the government’s attempts at communication revealed a lack of confidence in addressing the concerns raised by students and the public. Protests by student activists persisted in various locations, demanding accountability and structural reforms in response to competitive examination leaks.
