Karnataka’s Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Eshwar B Khandre has raised concerns regarding the environmental impact of off-road vehicle events. In a recent letter dated August 12, he urged officials to strictly enforce regulations pertaining to these events. His notice to the Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayat in Chikkamagaluru outlines the need for safeguarding the environment as various off-road activities are slated to take place in the state.

The Minister highlighted that he will initiate an off-road event in Nelamangala, Bengaluru Rural district, scheduled for August 15. Additionally, another event is set to occur in Kuduremukh, Chikkamagaluru district, on August 15 and 16. These developments coincide with the Independence Day weekend when numerous adventure activities are expected to attract participants.

In his communication, Khandre underscored the significance of adhering to Article 51A(g) of the Indian Constitution. This article delineates the responsibility of citizens toward the protection and improvement of forests, lakes, rivers, and wildlife.

Concerns About Environmental Impact

The Minister pointed out that vehicles, especially those equipped with modified tyres, pose a threat to rural infrastructures and delicate hill slopes. He noted that such off-road activities could disrupt the natural flow of rainwater, critically impacting groundwater recharge in local lakes, tanks, and rivers. Furthermore, Khandre expressed that these events contribute to both heat and air pollution, adversely affecting local wildlife.

Emphasising the collective duty to preserve the environment, he stated that protecting it is a shared responsibility among all citizens. Khandre’s remarks resonate with ongoing discussions about sustainable practices and environmental stewardship in Karnataka.

In order to mitigate potential harm, the Minister directed officials to prohibit vehicles involved in off-road events from entering water bodies, including streams, lakes, and canals. This restriction aims to ensure that no damage is inflicted upon rural roads and ecosystems.

Khandre further warned that legal action would be initiated against individuals who breach environmental regulations by polluting water sources or damaging public infrastructure. His firm stance indicates a commitment to maintaining ecological balance while allowing for recreational activities in the region.
