On April 22, 2026, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah commemorated the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack on its first anniversary. This tragic incident, which occurred last year, resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, sparking widespread outrage across the nation.

In a statement on the social media platform X, Abdullah reaffirmed the region’s collective stance against terrorism and violence. He remarked, “One year on, we remain united against terror and against violence,” emphasising the need for sustained efforts to eliminate both suffering and loss of innocent lives in Jammu and Kashmir.

Expressing his sympathy for the families affected by the attack, Abdullah stated, “We also remain in eternal solidarity with the families who lost their loved ones a year ago in that cowardly attack.” He paid homage to the victims, wishing for their eternal peace.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Reflects on the Tragedy

Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, also paid tribute to the victims on the same day. In his message on X, he recalled the tragic event and offered what he termed “humble tributes to the innocent souls who lost their lives in the gruesome terror attack.” Sinha highlighted the ongoing emotional impact of the tragedy on the region.

He noted, “Their memory endures indelibly in our hearts. My thoughts and prayers are with their families,” during his tribute, reinforcing the deep sense of loss felt by the community and the commitment to honouring the victims.

Pahalgam, recognised as a popular tourist destination, became the site of this attack, allegedly carried out by Pakistan-backed terrorists who targeted civilians based on their religious affiliation. The actions of the perpetrators drew strong condemnation both locally and nationally.

Response and Consequences of the Attack

The Indian government responded to the Pahalgam attack with significant military action, launching Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025. This initiative aimed to dismantle terror infrastructure situated in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK).

During this operation, the Indian armed forces targeted several terror launchpads connected to organisations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen, effectively degrading their operational capabilities. This military action drew retaliatory measures from Pakistan, which included drone attacks and cross-border shelling.

As tensions escalated, both nations experienced a brief period of military clashes lasting four days, where Indian forces executed precision strikes against key installations in Lahore and near Gujranwala. Following intensive communication between the Directors General of Military Operations from both countries, a ceasefire was implemented on May 10.

In anticipation of the anniversary, the Indian Army reiterated its commitment to deterrence, stating, “When boundaries of humanity are crossed, the response is decisive. Justice is served. India stands united.” This reflects the ongoing military and political resolve in the aftermath of the attack and the enduring memory of its victims.
