The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has reported the culmination of another series of military operations against Iran, marking the tenth consecutive night of strikes directed at diminishing the Islamic Republic’s military capabilities. This continued effort is primarily aimed at addressing Iranian activities that allegedly threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

As per the statement released on July 21, CENTCOM confirmed that the latest airstrikes were executed at 9 pm ET on July 20. The targeted infrastructure included Iranian military command centres, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and defensive systems. CENTCOM stated that this operation was necessary to curtail Iran’s capacity to conduct further assaults on vessels traversing this critical waterway.

In its communication, CENTCOM also noted that despite the ongoing military engagements, commercial shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz remains uninterrupted. Since May, forces have reportedly facilitated the movement of around 900 commercial vessels and the transport of 450 million barrels of crude oil through this vital maritime passage.

Iran’s Response and Retaliation

Following the US strikes, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and military forces targeted various assets associated with US interests across the Gulf region. Reports indicate that the IRGC claimed responsibility for attacks on an American missile defence radar system and an F-15 aircraft located in Jordan, in addition to hitting Amazon’s data infrastructure in Bahrain.

These operations were outlined by the IRGC as part of “Operation Nasr 2” while another segment of the Iranian military executed what’s referred to as “Operation Lightning.” The Iranian military has asserted that these operations included assaults on a US military compound in Jordan’s Rukban region, allegedly resulting in casualties among American personnel.

Moreover, Iranian sources indicated that an MQ-9 drone hangar at the Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait was reportedly struck, damaging several drones. The Iranian Army also contended that they targeted HIMARS missile systems associated with US forces at the Arifjan base in Kuwait using surface-to-surface missiles.

Increasing Tensions in the Region

The rising tensions between the United States and Iran have been exacerbated by the breakdown of a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was signed the previous month. This agreement was initially designed to mitigate hostilities and facilitate further discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and matters concerning the Strait of Hormuz.

The failure of this agreement has effectively reignited conflicts within West Asia, resulting in the US conducting strikes on both Iranian military and civilian targets, while Iran retaliated by targeting US bases throughout the Gulf region. As the situation develops, both parties have intensified military activities against one another, leading to concerns about broader regional stability.

The ongoing cycle of aggressive actions continues to draw international attention, as observers monitor the impacts these developments may have on maritime safety and geopolitical stability in the region. The current scenario reflects a complex web of interactions that could evolve further, necessitating close scrutiny by global stakeholders.
