Hyderabad Software Engineer Arrested for Cultivating Cannabis

The CSR Journal Magazine

A former software engineer was taken into custody on Monday in Hyderabad for allegedly growing cannabis on his terrace. The individual, identified as CH Shashidhar from Nacharam, was apprehended by officials from the Prohibition and Excise Department following a targeted raid.

During the operation, authorities seized 17 cannabis plants from Shashidhar’s rooftop, with estimates suggesting that the total yield could amount to nearly 10 kg of ganja. Some of the plants were observed to be flowering, while others had reached heights of up to three metres.

According to officials, Shashidhar developed a severe addiction to marijuana during his employment at a software firm, which reportedly led to him allocating a significant portion of his salary to purchasing the drug. His escalating addiction ultimately resulted in the loss of his job.

Circumstances Surrounding the Cultivation

Following his unemployment, Shashidhar allegedly decided to cultivate cannabis for personal use. With no regular income, he reportedly procured seeds and began growing the plants on his terrace. This decision has now led to legal repercussions and ongoing investigations into his activities.

A case has been filed against him, and authorities are continuing their inquiries to determine whether Shashidhar had any connections to larger supply or distribution networks related to cannabis trafficking.

The arrest sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals struggling with addiction, particularly in high-pressure environments such as the technology sector. The ramifications of substance abuse can extend beyond personal health and lead to legal consequences.

Related Drug Trafficking Incident in Uttar Pradesh

In a separate incident, three alleged drug traffickers were arrested in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, with authorities seizing 103 kg of cannabis valued at approximately Rs 52 lakh. The arrests occurred during a routine vehicle check on National Highway-19 by a joint team of the Special Operations Group and local police.

Additional Superintendent of Police Shubham Agrawal reported that the vehicle was intercepted during a routine inspection under the jurisdiction of Gopiganj police station. Upon searching the truck, six sacks containing the cannabis were discovered, leading to the immediate arrest of the suspects.

The individuals have been identified as Harvinder Singh Yadav, Mohit Parashar, and Nilesh Lodhi. During questioning, they allegedly confessed to sourcing cannabis at lower prices from Odisha and distributing it across various districts in Uttar Pradesh.

Authorities in Uttar Pradesh are taking steps to address the growing concerns surrounding drug trafficking in the region. The significant quantity of cannabis seized may indicate the scale of operations conducted by these traffickers and their impact on local communities.

As investigations continue in both cases, officials remain vigilant in their efforts to combat drug-related activities and support those affected by addiction. The authorities are also emphasising the importance of awareness and prevention measures to address these issues comprehensively.
