The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) conducted a significant protest march on August 11 from the Old Vidhan Sabha to the New Vidhan Sabha in Ranchi, Jharkhand. This demonstration is part of a broader wave of student protests occurring across the state regarding concerns related to examination and recruitment practices.

The protest coincides with ongoing discontent among student groups and job aspirants who are vocalising their grievances regarding alleged irregularities in the examination system. The focus of many demonstrators is on the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), as these bodies are central to the jobs many aspire to secure.

Participants have expressed specific demands, such as the cancellation of the JSSC-Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination and a requirement for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the alleged discrepancies within the recruitment processes. The ABVP’s leadership hopes that this march will amplify the voices of students seeking accountability and reform in the education and employment sectors.

Political Reactions to the Protests

The protests have garnered notable political attention, particularly from BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly, Babulal Marandi. He publicly accused the government of attempting to suppress student voices through force, suggesting that the government’s response to protests has been heavy-handed.

Marandi stated that the students’ primary demand is for a CBI inquiry into the alleged irregularities, asserting that accountability must be established. He noted that despite the government’s alleged attempts to silence dissent with force, the students’ determination will only intensify the movement across Jharkhand.

As tensions escalated, the police were reported to have used batons and water cannons against demonstrators during attempts to conduct a “Vidhan Sabha gherao” march. The clash highlights the growing unrest over the perceived lack of action from the government regarding the students’ grievances.

Government’s Stance on Student Demands

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has responded to these protests, with MP Mahua Maji defending the government’s approach. Maji noted that the Chief Minister, Hemant Soren, is committed to addressing student demands, having reportedly settled 98 per cent of those discussions.

Maji further explained that the remaining two per cent of demands are beyond the reach of the government under current circumstances, suggesting that the ongoing JCL matters are sub judice. She argued that cancelling the CGL examination would be unfair to candidates who had prepared for it and that the government is working on finding a resolution.

The situation remains fluid, and while some students have reportedly shown willingness to engage with government representatives, the incitement of protests by political groups is a continuing concern. The government asserts that it remains open to dialogue, but the protests reflect a broader discontent with the status quo in Jharkhand’s educational and recruitment processes.
