The Redmi Note 17 presents a fresh design that significantly deviates from its predecessor, the Note 15. With a broad rectangular structure, it features a flat plastic frame and a plastic backplate, replacing the previous model’s curves. The camera module has been repositioned to the upper left corner and is more square in shape, reminiscent of the Mi 11’s design from several years ago.

In the Starlight Purple variant, the rear of the phone exhibits a sparkly finish that shifts according to the light, resulting in an eye-catching aesthetic while also minimising fingerprints. The overall design is likely to attract attention when viewed by others. With a thickness of 8.4 mm and weighing approximately 225 grams, the Note 17 is manageable, though its sizeable 6.9-inch screen necessitates the use of both hands for operation.

Additionally, the device is rated IP65, offering resistance to dust and splashes, although a higher IP68 rating would have provided more comprehensive protection. Users should consider this rating depending on their needs.

Display and Audio Features

Equipped with a sizeable 6.9-inch FHD Plus AMOLED display that supports a 120Hz refresh rate, the Note 17 caters to users who enjoy consuming media on their devices. This display is capable of reproducing 100 per cent of the DCI P3 colour gamut, achieving a peak brightness of 1,800 nits and protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i.

While the display quality is commendable, there is a noticeable chin at the bottom, which may disappoint some consumers at this price level. The screen offers vibrant colours and performs decently under sunlight. Although Widevine L1 support allows for Netflix streaming, there is no HDR support for videos, limiting playback options on YouTube to 1080p.

The sound output is through a bottom-firing mono speaker that is adequate for everyday usage, though it lacks the immersive experience of stereo speakers. An optical fingerprint scanner is also included, delivering satisfactory performance, albeit not the fastest available.

Performance and Battery Life of Redmi Note 17

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 chipset, the Redmi Note 17 is paired with LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.2 storage, catering primarily to casual smartphone users. Those engaged in social media or video streaming will find the performance generally smooth without noticeable sluggishness during everyday tasks.

However, when pushed to its limits, such as during multitasking, the device may begin to lag. Casual gaming is manageable, with the phone able to run titles like Call of Duty Mobile at 60fps. Though the device remains relatively cool, gamers might experience minor frame drops in more demanding scenarios.

The phone’s battery life is one of its standout features, housing an 8,000mAh capacity. Under testing, it reportedly lasts over 19 hours on PCMark’s battery test. While average users may comfortably achieve two days of usage, heavy gamers should expect a shorter duration. The device supports 45W charging, with a full recharge taking just over an hour, and it includes 22.5W reverse charging as an added feature.
