The Telangana Labour Department has assembled an urgent joint conciliation meeting with key platform companies due to an impending indefinite strike by gig and platform workers starting on August 8. This meeting is a response to formal representations from the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and the Telangana App-Based Drivers Forum (TADF). The gathering aims to address the concerns raised by the workers, focusing on their demands for improved working conditions and wages.

Attendance of Platform Companies Required

Representatives from major companies such as Ola, Uber, Rapido, Porter, Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, and Blinkit have been instructed to attend the meeting with their authorised personnel and relevant documentation. This directive indicates the seriousness of the situation and the government’s intention to facilitate negotiations between the concerned parties. The meeting is considered a critical step towards resolving the ongoing disputes between the workers and the platform companies.

According to Shaik Salauddin, the Founder President of the TGPWU, this marks the final government-level conciliation gathering prior to the planned strike. The outcome of this meeting is poised to influence the future actions of several lakh gig, platform, app-based cab, auto, and delivery workers across the state of Telangana. With such a large number of individuals potentially affected, the government is under pressure to find a resolution that addresses the core issues of the workers.

Key Demands of Gig Workers Highlighted

The worker unions are voicing long-standing demands that revolve around wages, welfare, and working conditions. Notably, the TGPWU President has insisted on the removal of the 10-minute delivery option from all platforms and the reinstatement of a previous payout structure. In a statement to ANI on July 22, the TGPWU outlined three prominent demands that they hope will be addressed.

First, they are calling for an immediate increase in fares, emphasising that their previous appeals to both the government and platform companies have not received adequate attention. Secondly, the unions are insisting on the immediate implementation of the Gig and Platform Workers Act, which was passed but has yet to be fully enacted. Lastly, the unions are urging the state government to implement the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines from 2020 and 2025 without further delay. The unions also advocate for discussions and feedback sessions involving stakeholders, particularly the workers themselves.

Additionally, the unions are opposed to the use of white number plate vehicles for commercial rides, a practice they believe undermines fair competition and safety standards in the gig economy. The upcoming meeting holds significant potential for addressing these pressing issues, which have been longstanding obstacles for gig workers seeking better conditions and recognition within the industry.
