Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Launches Ambulances for Homeless and Sick People

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta formally launched a fleet of ambulances and vans on May 11, designed to assist homeless and ailing individuals in the city. This programme is a collaboration between the Delhi government and ‘Apna Ghar Ashram’, aimed at offering crucial support to street dwellers who lack access to medical care and shelter.

During the flag-off event, Gupta expressed the initiative’s commitment to rescuing vulnerable individuals from extreme conditions. She stated, “Today we have dispatched the ambulance and van from Apna Ashram, through which homeless and sick people in the city will be rescued and brought to the ashram. They will be treated and cared for there,” underlining the importance of this partnership in improving the lives of the less fortunate.

The ambulances will operate throughout Delhi, facilitating timely medical assistance for those who are in urgent need. Gupta highlighted the significance of providing both treatment and shelter as key components of the scheme.

Aftercare Scheme for Young Individuals Announced

On the previous day, May 10, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta introduced the ‘Aftercare Scheme for Young Persons’, coinciding with Mother’s Day celebrations. A budget of Rs 3.5 crore has been allocated for this initiative during the current financial year. The scheme targets young adults transitioning from government-run ‘Aftercare Homes’ and aims to aid their journey towards independence and self-sufficiency.

Gupta reiterated that the government’s goal extends beyond mere guardianship for children. She emphasised the importance of ensuring that no young person feels abandoned or unsupported as they navigate significant life changes. The scheme is designed to foster a more secure and dignified future for these individuals.

During the event, Gupta visited the Village Cottage Home in Lajpat Nagar, which is managed by the Department of Women and Child Development. She engaged in affectionate interactions with children residing there, further demonstrating her commitment to improving the support systems for the youth.

Child Care Institutions and Their Role

Gupta provided insights into the operations of Child Care Institutions (CCIs) in Delhi, of which there are currently 88 functioning across the city. These institutions collaborate with various non-governmental organisations to offer comprehensive care, protection, and education to children up to the age of 18. They are intended to facilitate rehabilitation and provide essential support, acting as a critical safety net for vulnerable minors.

In her address, Gupta detailed how these centres are crucial in shaping a better future for children. The government’s continuous efforts and investments aim to enrich the lives of those in these care facilities, to ensure each child receives the attention and resources they need.

This initiative reflects the Delhi government’s ongoing commitment to bolstering the welfare of both homeless individuals and children in need. Through strategic programmes such as the ambulance service and the aftercare scheme, the administration aims to create a supportive environment, securing health and wellbeing for the city’s most vulnerable populations.
