Uber Plans to Introduce 120,000 Driverless Cabs with $10 Billion Investment

Uber is set to make a significant investment in self-driving technology, committing over $10 billion (approximately Rs 95,000 crore) over the upcoming years. This initiative aims to roll out 120,000 autonomous vehicles, marking a shift from experimental projects to large-scale commercial operations. According to reports from the Financial Times, Uber is currently competing with companies such as Waymo and Tesla to establish the largest robotaxi network globally.

The company aims to launch autonomous ride services in at least 15 cities by 2026. The strategy reflects Uber’s ambition to lead in the field of driverless mobility. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated that the firm is making this investment while in a position of financial strength, emphasising their intent to build a robust global platform for autonomous vehicles.

In its latest financial report, Uber announced a record $2.8 billion in free cash flow for the second quarter, bringing its free cash flow over the past year to roughly $10.1 billion. Furthermore, gross bookings experienced a year-on-year increase of 24 per cent, amounting to $58 billion, while revenues reached $14.2 billion. This financial stability is believed to provide Uber with a significant advantage in the costly race to commercialise self-driving technology.

Collaborations and Partnerships

Rather than developing autonomous vehicles in isolation, Uber is pursuing partnerships with various autonomous vehicle companies and has invested in firms such as Zoox, Rivian, and Lucid. This collaborative approach may expedite the advancement and deployment of their driverless technology.

Recently, Uber revealed that over 1 lakh individuals in London have pre-registered to be among the first passengers when the driverless service launches later this summer. This significant interest indicates strong consumer demand for autonomous ride-sharing options.

As the rollout of driverless vehicles progresses, the public’s acceptance and engagement will play a crucial role in shaping the future landscape of urban mobility. The company is keen on ensuring that operational efficiency goes hand in hand with customer satisfaction.

Impact on Human Drivers

One of the pressing concerns surrounding Uber’s announcement is the potential impact on the millions of drivers currently using the platform. In the immediate future, human drivers are unlikely to see a rapid displacement, as robotaxis will operate initially only in selected cities with stringent control measures. Many autonomous vehicles are expected to have safety supervisors during the early stages of deployment.

Regulatory approvals, weather factors, and the challenges posed by complex traffic scenarios remain hurdles that the technology must overcome before widespread adoption can occur. Over time, as driverless technology becomes more dependable and economical, it may begin to take over specific routes where its effectiveness is highest, such as those to and from airports, city centres, or busy urban corridors.

Nevertheless, there is the potential for new job roles to emerge alongside the implementation of autonomous fleets. Positions in remote vehicle monitoring, fleet maintenance, cleaning, charging, and customer support may become available as the industry evolves. For now, Uber has not indicated plans to eliminate human drivers, and a mixed operational model of traditional ride-hailing services alongside robotaxis is anticipated for many years to come.
