Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Sunday that her government is determined to establish the national capital as the sports capital of India. This declaration came during her address at the closing ceremony of the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships held at the Thyagaraj Stadium. Gupta emphasised the government’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure and development as part of this initiative.

While awarding medals to the winners of the week-long tournament, Gupta reflected on Delhi’s successful track record in hosting international sporting events. She asserted that the city’s capability to manage such competitions demonstrates its readiness for further investment in this sector. “It is our resolve that Delhi becomes not only the political capital of the country but also the sports capital of India,” Gupta said.

Gupta noted that the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships took place from July 27 to August 2 and saw participation from athletes representing 25 Commonwealth nations. India excelled in this competitive environment, taking home nearly all the available gold medals, excluding one in the men’s doubles category.

Inspiring Future Generations

The Chief Minister revealed that the Delhi government had specifically invited school students to attend the championships, aiming to motivate them to engage with sports. Gupta highlighted the importance of athletic participation in nurturing qualities like discipline, leadership, teamwork, and a sense of patriotism among younger populations. By involving students in such events, the government hopes to cultivate a strong sporting culture in the city.

Gupta also outlined Delhi’s increasing aspirations as a sporting hub, announcing that the city is set to host both the ISF World School Wrestling Championship and the ISF World School Badminton Championship in 2027. Furthermore, she mentioned that bids have already been submitted to host the National Games and the Khelo India Games, signifying a broader strategy to position Delhi prominently on the global sports landscape.

“Through these events, Delhi will establish a strong identity on the global sports map,” Gupta asserted, reinforcing her government’s objective of promoting sports as a vital part of community life.

Recognition of Athletes and Organisers

During her speech, Gupta extended her congratulations to the Indian contingent, commending their achievements in both men’s and women’s team events. She praised all athletes for their efforts in contributing to the championship’s overall success. Gupta also expressed gratitude towards various stakeholders, including the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation and volunteering personnel, for their roles in ensuring the smooth execution of the event.

Delhi’s Education and Sports Minister, Ashish Sood, reiterated the significance of the championships, stating that it showcased the capital’s organisational strengths. He believed that such successful hosting would inspire more young individuals to take up sports. “The Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships have given Delhi a new identity on the global sports map,” Sood remarked, highlighting the camaraderie fostered through international athletic participation.

The Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships not only provided an opportunity for spirited competition but also served as a platform for enhancing international relations through sport. The involvement of athletes from 25 different countries exemplifies the unifying power of sports as a medium for mutual respect and friendship across nations.
