Serena Williams and Venus Williams are poised to return to the doubles tennis scene after a four-year hiatus, having received a wildcard entry into the Cincinnati Open scheduled for later this month. Tournament organisers confirmed this development on Monday, marking their first pairing since competing together at the 2022 US Open.

Missed Opportunity At Wimbledon

The sisters’ anticipated comeback was initially intended for Wimbledon; however, it was cancelled shortly before the tournament commenced. The Williams sisters had both accepted wildcard invitations to participate in the Championships. Unfortunately, Serena withdrew due to a knee injury incurred during her first-round singles match against Australia’s Maya Joint.

Following her withdrawal from Wimbledon’s doubles event, Serena disclosed on social media that she required fluid to be drained from her knee. Expressing her disappointment, she referred to being “heartbroken” at the missed opportunity of competing alongside her sister once again. In a post on Instagram, she reflected on her efforts to prepare, stating, “I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately, my knee just isn’t ready to compete.”

Despite this setback, Serena hinted at her continued commitment to professional tennis by encouraging fans to “stay tuned to a city near you,” suggesting that her competitive journey was far from over. With the Cincinnati Open now on the horizon, the event seems to provide a fitting platform for their imminent return.

Historic Accomplishments In Doubles Tennis

The Williams sisters have established themselves as one of the most successful doubles teams in the history of tennis. Collectively, they have garnered 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, including six championships at Wimbledon, along with three Olympic gold medals. Their achievements in the sport have not only made them iconic figures but have also contributed significantly to the popularity of women’s tennis.

Their last doubles appearance occurred during the 2022 US Open, which ended in disappointment as they faced a first-round defeat to the Czech duo of Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova.
