Rohit Sharma Pays Tribute to Former Fielding Coach T Dilip

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rohit Sharma recently honoured T Dilip, the former fielding coach of the Indian cricket team, who concluded his five-year association with the national squad. As Dilip marked his departure with a heartfelt farewell note, Sharma referred to him as a “legend” and commended his impactful contributions over the years. The tribute highlighted Dilip’s role in fostering a successful environment within the team, particularly during a prosperous period for Indian cricket.

Dilip first joined the Indian team in November 2021 and remained part of the coaching staff until after the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He made a return for a brief second term during India’s Test series in England in 2025 but was not retained thereafter. Following his exit, Subhadeep Ghosh has been appointed to fill the position, starting with the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

Sharma shared an image with Dilip on Instagram Stories, emphasising the coach’s behind-the-scenes efforts. He wrote: “You are a legend Dillip guru. You created magic within the group and a behind-the-scenes workhorse. Best wishes ahead @dillip.tk.19.” This personal message reflects the strong camaraderie that developed within the team during Dilip’s tenure.

Dilip’s Reflection on His Journey

On August 3, 2026, T Dilip took to Instagram to share his thoughts about his journey with the national team. He expressed gratitude to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), both past and present coaches, and the captains he worked alongside for their support. Dilip noted the difficulty he faced in finding the right words to encapsulate his emotional journey in the sport.

In his message, Dilip commented: “Five years. It’s difficult to find the right words for a journey that has meant so much. When I first walked into this setup, I came in with one simple intention, to give everything I had every single day.” He underscored his commitment to improving fielding standards within the team, a role he dearly cherished.

He also reflected on the introduction of a fielding medal tradition, which became popular during his time. Particularly notable during the 2023 ODI World Cup, the medal sparked enthusiasm and engagement among team members. Dilip described the medal as “a very special place in my heart,” capturing the joy and significance it brought to the team’s morale.

Achievements During Dilip’s Tenure

Dilip’s influence on the fielding standards in Indian cricket has been notable, particularly during major tournaments. He served his role during pivotal events such as two T20 World Cup victories, a Champions Trophy title, and two Asia Cup wins. His contributions were crucial in guiding the team through high-stakes competitions, including runner-up finishes in both the ODI World Cup and World Test Championship.

As he concluded his reflective note, Dilip expressed appreciation for the memories gained from his time with the team. He highlighted the joy derived from the players’ excitement regarding fielding achievements and initiatives, as these experiences have left an indelible mark on his career.

With Dilip’s departure, the Indian cricket team looks to embark on a new chapter under the guidance of Subhadeep Ghosh, while paying homage to the impactful legacy left by their former fielding coach. The transition serves as a reminder of the continuous evolution within the sport and the importance of strong leadership structures.
