The Gujarat government has announced a complete ban on the manufacture, storage, transportation, distribution, and sale of unauthorised analogue dairy products throughout the state. This measure, which took effect on August 3, 2026, aims to address public health issues and prevent consumer deception regarding products made with non-dairy ingredients. Health Minister Praful Pansheriya highlighted the need for this decision to safeguard citizens’ health.

Pansheriya stated that the state will not tolerate any compromises regarding health and described the prohibition of analogue dairy products as vital. With this ban, the government seeks to protect both consumers and legitimate dairy producers from misleading practices in the industry.

Focus on Consumer Safety and Regulatory Compliance

This move emerged following investigations conducted by the Food and Drug Regulatory Authority of Gujarat. Laboratory tests revealed that products resembling paneer were being created using vegetable oils and other non-dairy components instead of actual milk. The government expressed concerns that such practices not only mislead consumers but could also threaten food safety regulations.

Minister Pansheriya also urged food business operators across Gujarat to adhere strictly to food safety laws. In a public statement, he encouraged producers, traders, and outlets including hotels, restaurants, and caterers to commit to selling only genuine and high-quality food items.

The appeal for compliance with food safety norms reflects the government’s dedication to maintaining high standards in food production and distribution. Emphasising quality, Pansheriya’s remarks serve as a reminder for all involved in the food supply chain to prioritise public health.

Legal Action Against Violators of the Ban

In addition to the ban, the government has made it clear that strict legal measures will be enforced against individuals or businesses that contravene these new regulations. Under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, offenders may face significant penalties for the production or sale of unauthorised analogue dairy products.
