West Bengal Assembly Elections: Voters Queue Up in Asansol as Phase 1 Polling Commences

The first phase of polling for the West Bengal Assembly elections commenced on April 23, in Asansol, where long queues of voters were observed outside various polling stations. The polling started promptly at 7:00 am, with a significant turnout as citizens arrived to exercise their democratic rights. Preparations and Security Measures in Place

Aghore Kumar Roy, the Returning Officer for Asansol Uttar, stated on April 22, that comprehensive arrangements had been established to facilitate a smooth and peaceful voting experience. He indicated that polling parties were dispatched to their assigned stations equipped with all essential materials for the electoral process. Roy emphasised the extensive security protocols implemented, which included the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) at each polling location to safeguard the integrity of the elections.

In addition to Asansol, polling also progressed in Birbhum, where officials confirmed that arrangements were sufficient to ensure an orderly electoral process. The state is poised for a highly competitive election, with the incumbent Trinamool Congress vying for a fourth consecutive term against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which aspires to seize power following its notable performance in previous elections.

The West Bengal Assembly elections involve a total of 294 constituencies, with the current phase encompassing 152 Assembly seats. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), a second phase will follow, which includes 142 seats.
