One District One Product: How this Uttar Pradesh Initiative is Boosting Traditional Industries

The CSR Journal Magazine

The One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, introduced by the Yogi Adityanath administration in 2018, aims to bolster local industries in Uttar Pradesh by promoting traditional products linked to each of the state’s 75 districts. The programme prioritises existing local specialties rather than developing new sectors, with a focus on enhancing production, value addition, branding, and market access for these items.

This initiative builds on the rich history of district-specific manufacturing and crafts that have long defined the region. Products highlighted under the ODOP programme include renowned items such as Banarasi sarees from Varanasi, Chikankari from Lucknow, and intricate metal handicrafts from Moradabad, along with glassware from Firozabad, attar from Kannauj, carpets from Bhadohi, and woodcraft from Saharanpur.

Support for Artisans and Small Enterprises

The ODOP programme offers various forms of support to district-specific industries, focusing on quality enhancement, skill development, infrastructure improvement, and market access. The target beneficiaries include artisans, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), producer groups, and entrepreneurs engaged in traditional sectors. This comprehensive framework is designed to strengthen local value chains and boost the competitiveness of these traditional products.

A vital aspect of the initiative is its “Local to Global” strategy, which seeks to broaden the market reach of district-specific products beyond their traditional customer base. Eligible enterprises and artisan groups receive assistance to participate in national and international trade fairs, providing them with exposure to wider markets.

Furthermore, several ODOP products are being showcased through e-commerce platforms and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), significantly enhancing their visibility and access for potential buyers. This ongoing effort underscores the state government’s commitment to supporting traditional industries with financial aid, skill enhancement, and improved infrastructure.

Preserving Tradition While Adapting to Change

The district-based approach of the ODOP programme is intended to safeguard local crafts and the manufacturing traditions they represent while simultaneously enabling these industries to evolve in response to changing market dynamics. This dual focus aims to ensure that the unique identity of district-specific products is maintained even as they are integrated into broader domestic and international trade frameworks.

Overall, the ODOP initiative reflects a strategic policy move to connect Uttar Pradesh’s traditional industries with larger markets through carefully targeted institutional support mechanisms. As the programme progresses, it continues to encourage the preservation of local crafts while fostering economic growth and sustainability in the region.
