Google is officially phasing out its Google Assistant after a decade of service. The transition to the new AI assistant, Gemini, is set to commence on September 4, with the company notifying Android users via email. This marks a significant moment for the technology giant, as Google has provided its first specific date for the discontinuation of Assistant, which has been an integral feature on various devices since its introduction in 2016.

In its communication, Google confirmed that Assistant would be “discontinued” and that Gemini will henceforth be the default AI experience for users on eligible devices. The phased rollout is expected to take several weeks, and the timing will differ based on each user’s device, geographical location, and language settings.

From September 4 onwards, users will find that invoking “Hey Google” or long-pressing the power button will launch Gemini instead of Assistant. This change will be implemented across a variety of devices, including smartphones and connected gadgets.

Evolution of Google Assistant to Gemini

The evolution from Google Assistant to Gemini is significant in the landscape of AI-powered technology. Assistant has served as a core component of Android-based devices, including smartphones, smart speakers, televisions, and smartwatches for almost ten years. The transition to Gemini is part of a strategic move announced earlier, indicating that the new assistant would ultimately replace its predecessor.

Prior announcements by Google mentioned that Assistant would remain operational until March 2026. However, the company has now advanced the timetable for phasing out Assistant as it clearly outlines its plans for modernising the user experience with Gemini. This marks a shift from previous expectations regarding the timeline for Assistant’s discontinuation.

The transition to Gemini also expands beyond just mobile phones. If users select Gemini as their mobile assistant, it will extend its functionalities to compatible Wear OS smartwatches, headphones, and earbuds. Reports suggest that sessions projected via Android Auto from smartphones will also be migrated to Gemini.

Future of Google Assistant on Other Devices

Despite the upcoming changes, some devices will retain Google Assistant for the time being. For example, cars equipped with Google built-in features are expected to continue supporting Assistant even after September 4. Additionally, Google has indicated that the gradual introduction of Gemini will extend to Google TV devices, Google Home smart speakers, and smart displays in due course, although official timelines for these transitions remain unannounced.

Google has updated its support pages to reflect this shift, displaying a banner confirming that Gemini will replace Google Assistant on most mobile devices. The company asserts that Gemini is capable of performing a multitude of tasks previously managed by Assistant, while offering enhanced conversational capabilities and advanced artificial intelligence features.

In the meantime, Google Assistant will continue to function on devices not compatible with Gemini and within regions where the new assistant is not yet available. For those eligible users, the transition to Gemini is set to begin promptly on September 4.
